Pierre Bourdieu's Theory of Practice offers nurses a framework to uncover embodied knowledge of patients living with disabilities or illnesses: A discussion paper

Abstract: Bourdieu's theory enriches nursing because the theory allows for consideration of both the objective and the subjective through the conceptualization of capital, habitus and field. Uncovering individuals embodied knowledge is critical to implement best practices that assist patients as they adapt to bodily changes during disability and illness.

“…My read of the literature on catastrophizing and avoidance behavior is meant to demonstrate that the dispositions contained within habitus can mediate pain. The doctor-patient interface may not be the place for invoking habitus, but this discussion shows the potential for habitus to serve as a heuristic for the social elements of pain within medical research—indeed, Oerther and Oerther (2018) make just this point in the context of treating patients adjusting to disabilities. Whereas this use of pain research affirms habitus as Bourdieu theorized it, I now look more closely at how pain impacts the brain to underline the “bio” in the bio-habitus.…”

“…Therefore, it is important to interpret these three core concepts. These concepts are based on Bourdieu’s theory of class distinction: economics, social relations and culture are concepts used to explain human relationships and individual personalities when interacting within a thriving society (Bourdieu, 1979; Oerther and Oerther, 2018). Economics is linked to the upper, middle and lower classes in terms of the economic status of individuals or groups.…”

“…A Bourdieusian theoretical lens was used to inform the analysis of doxas that reproduce the status quo of oppression within the social work field of practice (Edwards & Imrie, 2003). Doxas were defined in this research as the absent but implicit rules of practice within each field, embodied in the performance of action (Oerther & Oerther, 2018). The project also employs Bourdieu's notion of reflexivity, which embraces the way that socio-cultural discourse interconnects with the research practitioner's subjectivities as central to the knowledge-production process (Wiegmann, 2017).…”
