Piecewise modeling of the associations between dry period length and milk, fat, and protein yield changes in the subsequent lactation

Abstract: Our objective was to develop predictive models of 305-d mature-equivalent milk, fat, and protein yields in the subsequent lactation as continuous functions of the number of days dry (DD) in the current lactation. In this retrospective cohort study with field data, we obtained DHIA milk recording lactation records with the last DD in 2014 or 2015. Cows included had DD from 21 to 100 d. After editing, 1,030,141 records from cows in 7,044 herds remained. Three parity groups of adjacent (current, subsequent) lacta… Show more

“…The piecewise functions of Pattamanont et al (2021b) do not depend on level of production during the current parity or yield at dry-off. However, higher levels of milk production in the current parity increased yield deviations (Pattamanont et al, 2021b).…”

“…Yields per DIM were modeled with the 4-parameter MilkBot model (Ehrlich, 2011) for parities 1 to 4. The parameters (Appendix Table A1) were estimated on the same data that were used to estimate changes in milk yield in the subsequent parity associated with different DPL (Pattamanont et al, 2021b). These yields represent yields of open cows when DPL in the previous parity was 50 d.…”
