Being a common phenomenon, bilingualism occurs when a person acquires two languages. Bilingualism can take place for commercial, political, and educational purposes. Educational purposes aside, the unwavering commercial and political ambitions of bigger civilizations coerced them to colonize smaller civilizations. For this reason, they imposed their languages on the colonized local people. Locals responded to the demands of colonizers by forming their languages called pidgin. As this common language evolved and became the native language of the contiguous generation, the language improved following its linguistic features, that is, creolized. Several theories regarding their origin exist in the literature. Thus; the present review aims to examine and explain these theories concerning their historical background and framework and mention the influence of media on pidgins and creoles appealing to antecedent studies in the relevant literature. Based on the systematic review of different studies, the present review concludes that pidgins and creoles are not inaccurate versions of standard languages, but separate languages worthy of studying. Besides, the theories of pidgin and creole origins are all useful guidelines that require holistic analysis because of their interconnectedness. Theories of polygenesis and monogenesis present this integrity complying with Stammbaum (1871) and Wellentheorie (1872). When it comes to the influence of the media, the present review concludes that mediatic tools, such as television, the Internet, and mobile phones, along with literature and music, enable locals to demonstrate their identity, but may sometimes lead to cyberbullying and illegal acts.

Language contact research is often concerned with understanding which bounded language(s) are the source of particular linguistic forms, and identifying and explaining (in)consistencies across contexts of language contact. The field tends to place its focus on contexts in which variable use of linguistic forms is particularly salient, leading to interest in language change, shift, and minoritised languages. This chapter draws on linguistic anthropology and usage-based contact linguistics. We frame language contact broadly, as being the study of the exchange of semiotic resources across boundaries. Identification of the right boundaries becomes a core part of contact linguistics then, as resources are dynamically and differentially associated with particular social labels, including named languages. We argue that processes typically ascribed to contact (e.g. borrowing) are found across all contexts of language use. This approach has the advantages of, (a) Rejecting colonialist and essentialist characterisations of languages and language users which obscure the variable and opportunistic use of semiotic resources that typifies all language use; (b) Expanding beyond traditional, unimodal analysis to include multimodal, semiotic resources used in interaction; (c) Appealing to language users’ subjectivities, as opposed to top-down groupings, to account for the use of semiotic resources.

Lingua francas as evidence of standard language ideology in historical perspective

The paper considers historical lingua francas and standard language ideology from the framework of ‘language history from below’. Although some work has been devoted to mixed forms of language in studies of standardisation, little attention has been paid to lingua francas. This paper focusses on a historical dictionary – the Dictionnaire de la langue franque of 1830 – to argue that historical data can be considered as evidence ‘from below’ for the broader ideologies of standardisation which were circulating in early modern Europe. I argue that the fictive dialogues contained in the Dictionnaire are a projection that reflect broader theories about language standardisation at the time. In this sense, the paper argues for further development of the role of lingua francas in models of standardisation more generally.
