Picosecond optical parametric oscillator pumped synchronously, intracavity, by a mode-locked Nd:YVO4 laser

Abstract: Abstract:The operation of a picosecond synchronously intracavity pumped optical parametric oscillator (OPO) is reported. A magnesium doped lithium niobate crystal (MgO:PPLN), periodically poled, is used as the optical parametric oscillator crystal coupling the pump and the resonant signal cavities. The active medium of the pump cavity is a a diode pumped passively mode-locked Nd:YVO 4 crystal. Continuous mode-locked operation was achieved, tunable from 1531 to 1554 nm by adjusting the OPO crystal from 31 to 55… Show more

“…Nowadays, optical parametric oscillators (OPO) in the eye-safe waveband have attracted a great deal of attention to their potential applications in optical communications, laser range finding, remote sensing of aerosols, coherent laser radar, etc [1][2][3][4][5]. KTiOAsO 4 (KTA) has been verified to be an efficient nonlinear crystal to generate 1.5 μm laser by non-critically phase-matched (NCPM) OPO [6,7].…”

“…Another way to obtain multi-wavelength output reported is to use periodical poled materials (PPLN, PPLT) in nonlinear optical processes [6,7], in which by integrating different grating periods in one periodical poled material, high power red-green-blue light has been realized [8]. At the same time, the single wavelength optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) in eye-safe wavelength have been extensively reported using KTA [9][10][11], MgO:PPLN [12], KTP [13][14], etc. ; there are also some works reporting the compact IOPO at single eye-safe wavelength [15][16][17].…”

“…LD pumped lasers with the Nd:YVO 4 crystal at 355 nm [2], 914 nm [3], and 1064 nm [14][15][16] are already available in commercial products and research field. However, scaling to higher power with good efficiency is still plagued by thermal aberrations and thermally induced fracture [17].…”
