Pickering emulsion-enhanced interfacial biocatalysis: tailored alginate microparticles act as particulate emulsifier and enzyme carrier

Abstract: A robust Pickering emulsion stabilized by lipase-immobilized alginate gel microparticles with a coating of silanized titania nanoparticles is developed for biphasic biocatalysis.

“…In Pickering emulsions, solid particles are irreversibly immobilized at the oil–water interface because of their high adsorption energy to suppress the emulsion coalescence, which makes the obtained emulsion highly stable. [ 32–37 ] Therefore, the Pickering emulsions have been regarded as ideal templates for the fabrication of the essential oil–loaded microcapsules by fixing the solid particles at the emulsion droplet interface. However, there is little literature describing the preparation of the CMO‐loaded microcapsules based on Pickering emulsion templates.…”

“…3(g)). 90 Yet another way of stabilising Pickering emulsions is with mixtures of particles, especially those of opposite charge. [91][92][93] Inspired from this idea, Yang et al used the colloidal tectonic approach to prepare emulsions stabilized from the interaction between cationic [C 12 ] 3 [PW 12 O 40 ] nanoparticles (resulting from the ionic attraction between dodecyltrimethylammonium chains and phopshotungstate anions) and anionic silica nanoparticles grafted with alkyl and sulfonic acid groups.…”

“…In order to determine the type of Pickering emulsion, PBS was mixed with FITC-Dex and then used as the aqueous phase for emulsion preparation. The labelled CALB@SNFs-PE was observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM, Leica TCS SP5 optical microscope) with the emission of 495-545 nm [9,47,48].…”
