Phytostabilization of polymetallic contaminated soil usingMedicago sativaL. in combination with powdered marble: Sustainable rehabilitation

Abstract: This study uses an ecotoxicology approach to evaluate the effectiveness of combining powdered marble as an amendment, with phytostabilization by Medicago sativa L. on the neutralization of acidic mine tailings, and the stabilization of heavy metals. The mine tailings were collected from an abandoned polymetallic mine in Southern Morocco, and mixed with powdered marble as the following proportions, 25%, 50%, and 75%. Laboratory immobilization/stabilization tests showed that the application of powdered marble in… Show more

“…The climate of the area is semi-arid with annual average rainfall of approximately 250 mm and the evapotranspiration can reach 1500 mm/year [24]. The mine was active for many years for the extraction of copper, zinc, iron, and cadmium, and its environmental characteristics have been previously described by several authors [3,25,26]. The abandoned Kettara mine site is almost 30 hectares of toxic mining waste containing more than three million tons of sulphurous mining wastes [26] exposed to rain, sun and wind [5].…”

“…C. colocynthis is characterized by excluder traits and can be used successfully in phytostabilization [42]. Similar results were observed for other plant species (Medicago sativa L., Zygophyllum fabago, Helichrysum decumbens, Erica andevalensis, Tamarix sp., Lygeum spartum, Cistus, Cytisus...) in mining areas [25,[43][44][45]. The mobility of MTEs into C. colocynthis tissues from mine tailings was evaluated through the determination of the BCF (Figure 7b).…”
