Phytoremediation of Petroleum Products Contaminated Soil

Abstract: This study investigated the impact of petroleum products on the physiochemical properties, heavy metals and THC of soil samples; and their possible phytoremediation. Perforated plastic buckets were filled with 10 kg of sieved virgin topsoil. A mixture of 2 L of spent engine oil, 2 L of kerosene, 2 L of petrol and 2 L of diesel was gradually poured into each bucket and allowed to drain through the soil, once a day for five days, and there after left to stabilize for a period of 21 days. Fluted pumpkin (Telforia… Show more

“…Petroleum is a complex mixture, containing significant amount of saturated alkanes, alkynes, alkenes, napthenes, highly toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and some heavy metals [3]. Petroleum compounds are toxic to all forms of life, and have adverse effect on the soil's physical characteristics and biochemical properties [4]. Petroleum hydrocarbon contamination has become a critical environmental issue due to its immobilization and accumulation [5][6]; and is now seriously affecting the safety of ecosystems and human health [4; 7].…”

“…Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) are good accumulators of contaminants (Akpan & Usuah, 2014). In addition, studies by Akpokodje and Uguru (2019) reported the degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons from 964.35 to 104 mg kg −1 by okra plants.…”

“…Globally, petroleum production is on the increase, despite its widely some of their negative consequences on the ecosystems (Akpomrere and Uguru, 2020a). Petroleum production has three major sections; the exploration and production, the refining and marketing section, and the infrastructure/transportation section (Walls, 2010;Akpokodje et al, 2019a).…”

“…Environmental pollution resulting from oil spills cannot be ignored or disregarded; as one of these environmental impacts is the alterations in the soils' engineering properties and behavior. It has been reported (Elisha, 2012;Al-Obaidy et al, 2019) that oil has the capability of increasing the petroleum hydrocarbons and toxic metals concentrations in the soil; thus causing significant modification to the soils' chemical, mechanical, physical and biological properties (Puri, 2000;Chang et al, 2014;Akpokodje et al, 2019a).…”
