This study was performed in order to understand the relative contribution of a constructed wetland (CW) system's various components to phenol degradation (100 mg•L -1 ) under controlled plant biomass/gravel/ water experimental ratios. This was done by division of a pilot-scale CW system into its components, with or without their associated bacteria: (i) gravel, plant and water; (ii) gravel and water; (iii) water; (iv) gravel; (v) plant; (vi) control (sterile water). The highest phenol biodegradation rate occurred for the gravel-attached biofilm followed by root-attached biofilm and planktonic population, which recorded a similar rate to each other and a much lower rate than the gravel-attached biofilm. A control containing CW planktonic inactivated bacteria (autoclaved water) did not impact phenol removal, revealing that microbial populations are the major factor in phenol removal. The differences in the phenol removal achieved could be attributed to higher numbers of specific phenol degraders on the gravel surface, compared to lower numbers of root-attached and planktonic bacterial fractions, as isolated using phenol-agar plates which contained phenol as the sole carbon source. The main contributor to our findings appears to be the larger surface area provided by the gravel bed compared to plant roots.

Military training reservations contain vehicle wash facilities where combat vehicles and other equipment are washed after field maneuvers. During this process, sediments containing significant concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons accumulate in concrete sedimentation basins. Conventional treatment methods to decontaminate these sediments include landfill disposal or land application. However, vegetative remediation systems may offer a cost‐effective alternative. A phytoremediation design that reduces petroleum hydrocarbons to acceptable levels and is simple to manage was developed for the Central Vehicle Wash Facility at Fort Riley, Kansas. Two treatments using vegetation and fertilizer were compared to a treatment of fertilizer and no vegetation in a 3‐year study. Initial hydrocarbon concentrations, determined as total petroleum hydrocarbons, averaged about 800 mgTPH/kgsoil. All treatments resulted in reductions in total petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations of about 75% after 1 year, suggesting that hydrocarbons in the motor vehicle wash sediments have high biodegradability. Although no significant differences in hydrocarbon degradation were observed among treatments, the benefits of establishing vegetation to cover sediments during treatment suggests phytoremediation as a useful low‐cost tool to manage similar hydrocarbon impacted vehicle wash sediments. © 2011 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 2012

Heavy metals are largely responsible for soil and water pollution. Recently, phytoremediation is receiving a large attention as a plant-based technology for removing metals from contaminated soil and water in an environment-friendly and cost-effective way. In such context, some species of ferns such as Pteris cretica were found to be a hyper-accumulator of arsenic (As). In this study, we first explored the validity of measuring the water-refilling process in xylem vessels of Pteris cretica using the synchrotron X-ray microimaging technique. Then we investigated the effects of arsenic concentration on the water-refilling speed inside the xylem vessel. The methodology to measure the water-refilling speed was consistent within five repetitions and 3 hours after the stem sample was cut from the plant. The water-refilling speed in the xylem vessels of the Pteris grown in arsenic solution was faster than that in normal water. Arsenic concentration of 0-1,000 μM was tested and the maximum speed was obtained at 500 μM. Conclusively, the experimental methodology developed in this study allowed to obtain some interesting results for understanding how arsenic affect the xylem sap flow transport and the mechanism by which growth is enhanced in the presence of heavy metal.
