“…The Cucaracha Formation lies above the shallow marine Culebra Formation and below the basalt flows of the middle Miocene Pedro Miguel Formation (Woodring, 1964; Kirby et al, 2008). The fossiliferous horizon, described in greater detail elsewhere (Herrera et al, 2010; Jud et al, 2016), belongs to the lower part of the Cucaracha Formation and is reliably dated to ∼19 mya (Herrera et al, 2014; MacFadden et al, 2014). We cut the fossil stem in transverse and longitudinal orientations using a Microslice 2 annular saw (ULTRA TEC Mfg, Santa Ana, California, USA) and prepared serial transverse (XS), radial (RLS), and tangential (TLS) sections using the cellulose acetate peel technique (Joy et al, 1956).…”
