The importance of plants in the urban environment is sufficiently demonstrated by their potential and the ecosystem services they generate for the environment and populations. The present work aimed at assessing the contribution of avenue trees to carbon sequestration in the municipality of Sèmè-Podji in Benin. The methodological approach used has allowed making the inventory of trees along 26 kilometers of managed roadways. The diversity and structure parameters were computed to assess the floristic potential, the diameter and height structure of the trees, then the sequestered carbon from the allometric equations established for urban environments. The results revealed 19 species grouped into 12 families and 17 genus along the explored streets. Shannon's average diversity index (3.25±0.13 bits) and Pielou's equitability (0.76±0.04) explain the dominance of a few species, among which the most representative are Terminalia catappa (33.79%), Delonix regia (12.5%), and Khaya senegalensis (9.72%). The diameter and height structures are irregular, with average of 46.75 ± 33.46 cm and 10.35 ± 5.33 m respectively. The aerial biomass for the inventoried streets is 756.16 t/ha, corresponding to a carbon stock of 378.17 t/ha, that is the equivalent of 102.09 t of CO2 per hectare. It appeared from this study that the floristic procession and the structural characteristics of the avenue trees are limited to ensure the socio-ecological functions in the municipality of Sèmè-Podji. However, this information could encourage decision-makers to take reforestation measures to increase the vegetation cover of the streets and for better management of the city's urban forestry.

The study of the floristic diversity of street trees and the concerns of the population is conducted in Brazzaville. The theme is oriented on the place and the interest of the trees of alignment in the urban development. The methodology is based on the systematic counting of woody trees with a diameter at breast height (dbh) ≥ 10 cm, of 32 arteries selected according to the number of trees in the line and the degree of urban development. The concern of the populations is informed via a questionnaire whose informants are selected following a non-probability sampling for convenience. The floristic inventory lists 1867 woody trees organized into 42 species, 32 genera and 16 families. The allochthonous portion dominates a flora with senescent individuals (Terminalia mantaly, Millettia laurentii, Pithecellobium dulce, Albizia lebbeck) and of dbh ≥ 70 cm. Despite a dominance of Fabaceae and Combretaceae, the biodiversity indices reveal a low degree of diversification whose equitability of taxa supports floristic similarity between boroughs. In terms of concerns, while there is unanimity about the ecosystem goods and services derived from avenue trees, the choice of taxa reveals divergences correlated with socio-professional categories. Finally, the poor practice of street trees in urban development gives a negative opinion of this stand with regard to the disservices caused to roads and structures. The roles and functions of the tree being recognized by all, the increase of the woody cover based on local species is desired in order to serve as a reservoir of biodiversity and fulfill the educational action, while underpinning the satisfaction of the daily needs of the populations.

Biodiversity is one of the important indicators of ecosystem sustainability, which is less studied in relation to urban areas, particularly Ukraine, and even more so in small towns. Taking the example of three small Ukrainian towns, the biodiversity of tree species is compared in the article. The studied small towns are located in two geographic zones, mixed forests (Polissya) and forest-steppe, and administratively, in Chernihiv and Kyiv regions. An inventory of trees in the residential area of Ukrainka, in the central streets of Novhorod-Siverskyi, as well as in the central part and all streets of Vyshhorod was conducted. Thus, the species richness of trees both between the studied towns and between its central part and the whole territory of the town was compared. The species structure of tree plantings in terms of richness, diversity, dominance, alignment, and similarity was assessed. The obtained results were subjected to cluster and correlation analysis. It was found that the greatest diversity is characteristic for the dendroflora of the whole territory of Vyshhorod, which is the fastest growing town, located closest to the capital. The dendrofloras of small towns were quite similar to each other. The values of similarity indices varied in a wide range: Jacquard’s index from 0.26 to 0.56 and Sørensen index from 0.41 to 0.66. The lowest degree of similarity was found with the dendroflora of the most distant Novgorod-Siverskyi town. Mainly the urban plantings require enrichment of the tree species composition, taking into account their resistance to anthropogenic impacts and climate change.
