The search for new bioactive molecules with antifungal properties to combat resistance to classical antifungals represents a great challenge. This study aimed to explore the virulence factors and resistance profile of Candida species isolated from urine samples in Benin and the in vitro efficacy of organic extracts of Cyanthillium cinereum (L.) H.Rob., Lippia multiflora Moldenke and Khaya senegalensis (Desv.) A.Juss. on the growth of these Candida spp. The study focused on Candida strains isolated from urine samples collected from patients admitted to the bacteriological analysis laboratories of hospitals in Southern Benin. The sensitivity of these strains to classical antifungal agents was determined by the simple diffusion method. Their pathogenicity was investigated via several virulence factors (gelatinase, hemolysin, hydrophobicity, adhesin, biofilm and lecithinase). The in vitro efficacy of the aqueous, ethanolic and hydro-ethanolic extracts of the plants on Candida albicans ATCC 90028 and on six clinical strains was evaluated by the method of determination of the inhibition diameters. The results obtained showed that 51 different Candida strains were isolated from the collected urine samples with a respective predominance of Candida albicans (52.94%) and Candida glabrata (17.64%) species. All identified species were sensitive to amphotericin B and nystatin but 20% are resistant to fluconazole and present 15 different resistance profiles. Six different virulence factors were identified with a high frequency of hydrophobicity (96.08%) and adhesin (94.12%). Antifungal tests revealed that at 100 mg/mL the plant extracts were active on the tested strains with better activity for Cyanthilium cinereum and Khaya senegalensis. Cyanthilium cinereum, Khaya senegalensis and Lippia multiflora showed antifungal activity on virulent Candida strains suggesting the possibility to explore them further for the discovery of new antifungal molecules.

The general objective of this study is to contribute to the promotion of edible wild vegetables available in Madagascar. Its specific objective is to determine the physicochemical, nutritional and functional properties and the polyphenols and flavonoids contents of the Stenochlaena tenuifolia (BLECHNACEAE) leaves. Physical, physicochemical and biochemical methods have been used to characterize the powder from the leaves of this plant. The results obtained showed that the powder of the Stenochlaena tenuifolia leaves has a pH equal to 5.25±0.04 and an acidity equal to 2.57±0.23%. Its water and dry matter contents are respectively equal to 3.35±0.03% and 95.65±0.01%. Its macronutrient content, such as proteins, crude fat and carbohydrates, expressed in grams per 100 grams of dry matter, are respectively 32.30±0.17; 4.27±0.06 and 49.71±0.01. The metabolizable energy provided by this powder (in kcal per 100g) is 292.02±0.01. Its crude ash content is 10.35±0.04%. Its mineral elements content, such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, phosphorus, zinc and copper (in mg per 100 g) of this powder are respectively 81.78±0.29; 287.15±6.60; 3140.59±24.64; 15.64±0.16; 540.90±7.71; 4.91±0.13 and 2.85±0.03. The potential renal acid load of this plant is –52.88. The functional properties, such as water and oil retention capacities, the hydrophilic-lipophilic ratio and the solubility index of the powder produced are respectively 486.29±8.44%; 170.00±8.16%; 2.86 and 20.36±0.20%. Its total polyphenols and total flavonoids contents are respectively 457.01±0.15mg pyrogallol equivalent per gram of dry matter and 15.12±0.23mg quercetin equivalent per gram of dry matter. Therefore, this plant has important nutritional, functional and phytochemical properties. Thus, this wild leaf vegetable can be used to fight against malnutrition and especially protein-energy malnutrition which affects almost the entire population in Madagascar.

Background: Argemone mexicana is an important medicinal plant species used by local people to treat several diseases. Despite its importance, the species faces serious conservation problem. This study was conducted in southern Benin to assess the traditional knowledge and uses of A. mexicana within four socio-cultural groups.Methods: Ethnobotanical surveys were conducted in local communities with 130 informants randomly selected among four socio-cultural groups namely Fon, Adja, Mahi, and Nago/Yorouba. The interview was performed in local language. Ethnobotanic parameters were calculated to assess the knowledge and use of the species. Hierarchical Cluster Analysis followed by Correspondence Analysis (CA) were used to show the relation between the surveyed populations, diseases treated and the involved organs.Results: Local community members of the four socio-cultural groups used the different parts of A. mexicana for 12 treatments. The leaves of the species were the most organ used followed by the whole plant. The socio-cultural group Fon had better knowledge of the uses of the species compared with others. The old men/women tradi-practitioner had the best knowledge on the species. A. mexicana was only present in agroforestry systems. The deforestation was the main threat of the conservation of the species. Conclusion:This study demonstrates the use of A. Mexicana in Southern Benin. The result could be used to develop specific sustainable utilization and conservation strategies of A. Mexicana within local communities of Benin.
