Phytochemicals in whole grain wheat and their health‐promoting effects

Abstract: Accumulated evidence in epidemiological studies has consistently shown that consumption of whole grains (WGs) is inversely associated with risk of major chronic diseases such as certain types of cancer, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Dietary fiber (DF) has been reported to be responsible for the health effects of WG consumption. Evidence from in vitro and in vivo studies is emerging that, in addition to DF and minerals, the unique phytochemicals in WGs may in part contribute to these health-prom… Show more

“…In the present study, it was also shown that adolescents with PMS had a low consumption of whole grains and a high consumption of refined grains which could also be a contributing factor triggering the symptoms of PMS. Whole grains are important components of a healthy diet as they are packed with protein, fibre, B vitamins, iron, zinc, copper, magnesium and antioxidants including vitamin E and phytochemicals . The content of B vitamins, fibre and minerals of whole grains might be especially linked to PMS symptoms.…”

“…Health beneficial constituents of WGs include phytochemicals, bioactive carbohydrate fractions, peptides, and other phytonutrients [11,[13][14][15][16]. WGs contain high amounts of phytochemicals, which are plant secondary metabolites that have shown biological activity and have been broadly investigated as health beneficial groups of compounds in food [17][18][19]. Particularly important are phenolic constituents, which are major forms of these phytochemicals and vital with reference to their unique contribution to the health benefits of WGs.…”

“…However, recent studies indicated that the nutritional benefits of WGs may partly be attributed to some phytochemicals other than fiber because of their strong antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory effects, such as avenanthramides (AVAs) in oats and alkylresorcinols (ARs) in wheat and rye. [ 6,7 ]…”
