Phytochemicals in traditional Chinese medicine can treat gout by regulating intestinal flora through inactivating NLRP3 and inhibiting XOD activity

Abstract: Objectives Gout is a common disease caused by hyperglycemia. Traditional drugs for gout have both good therapeutic effects and serious side effects. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is one of the potential sources of modern medicine, and is the development of new drugs for many diseases, including gout. TCM is an indispensable part of gout treatment. Compared with anti-gout medication commonly used in clinic (e.g. the xanthine oxidase inhibitors allopurinol and febuxostat), traditional Chin… Show more

“…Gout, a common disease caused by the monosodium urate accumulating in the wrong spots, is usually characterized by high uric acid in the body and related to hyperuricemia [ 231 ]. Traditional treatment methods for gout include the used of xanthine oxidase (XOD) inhibitors, such as allopurinol and febuxostat, but they can lead to side effects that could also make patients’ lives difficult, such as kidney failure [ 231 , 232 ]. Therefore, researchers have been trying to find another way to treat gout and have discovered potential in the natural components of plants [ 232 ].…”

“…The functions of the intestinal flora can be divided into three categories, mainly metabolic activities: release of short-chain fatty acids as well as microbial K and some vitamin B, participation in the regulation of fat, blood glucose, cholesterol, etc. nutrition of the intestine, and barrier effect [5]. The study of intestinal flora offers new perspectives on the pathogenesis of many diseases due to the diversity of their functions.…”
