Phytochemical Screening, Antioxidant Effect and Down Regulation of TGF-β Induced by Ophiocoma erinaceus Brittle Star Crude Extract

Abstract: Background: Recent investigations get focused on characterization and isolation of natural compounds with pharmaceutical applications from terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem. Marine invertebrate natural products have been proposed due to various structural diversity. Ophiocoma eraniceus (O. erinaceus) is a brittle star species belonging to Echinodermata that distributed in Qeshm island in the Persian Gulf. Recent scientist researches have concentrated on discovery of natural resources with pharmacological and b… Show more

“…The down-regulation of VEGF and bFGF was stronger than the down-regulation of TGF-β. This finding, at gene expression levels, confirms the Baharar's study showing the anti-angiogenesis effects of a brittle star extract in a CAM model [22].…”

“…Several studies have investigated Ophiuroids as a source of anti-tumor and anti-metastatic organisms. Considerable number of studies are indicative of the noticeable anti-tumor properties of the Ophiuroids [21,22,23]. The Persian Gulf as a rich marine ecosystem is a territory of different species of Ophiuroids containing components characteristics of this part of the world.…”

“…Therefore, the proliferation of cancer cells in metastatic state may become faster as a result of freeradical-mediated injuries (Nishikawa and Hashida, 2006). Our previous observations exhibited that brittle star methanol extract has cytotoxic and antioxidant ability (Baharara and Amini, 2015). In this study, the antioxidant capacity of isolated saponin has been confirmed by DPPH and ABTS methods.…”

“…Arm regeneration is prominent feature of brittle star that make it popular as an experimental study (Czarkwiani et al, 2013). In the preliminary study we found cytotoxic, antioxidant and hemolytic activity of brittle star (Baharara and Amini, 2015). However, it has been reported that saponins possess wound healing, cytotoxic and hemolytic effect, we decided to extract saponin from brittle star and evaluatetherapeutic effect of extracted saponin.…”

“…The growth factors subsequently bind to their corresponding receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) within the endothelial cells in blood vessels (6,7). This receptor binding results in the activation of the otherwise dormant endothelial cells, causing to divide and migrate towards the diseased tissues, or, in this case, the tumor cells (8).…”
