Terminalia citrina (T. citrina) belongs to the Combretaceae family and is included in the class of medicinal plants in tropical countries such as Bangladesh, Myanmar, and India. The antioxidant activities of lyophilized water (WTE) and alcohol extracts (ETE) of T. citrina fruits, their phenolic content by LC‐HRMS, and their effects on cholinesterases (ChEs; AChE, acetylcholinesterase, and BChE, butyrylcholinesterase) were investigated. Especially ten different analytical methods were applied to determine the antioxidant capacity. Compared with similar studies for natural products in the literature, it was determined that both WTE and ETE exhibited strong antioxidant capacity. Syringe and ellagic acids were higher than other acids in ETE and WTE. IC50 values for ETE and WTE in DPPH radical and ABTS⋅+ scavenging activities were calculated as 1.69–1.68 μg mL−1 and 6.79–5.78 μg mL−1, respectively. The results of the biological investigations showed that ETE and WTE had an inhibition effect against ChEs, with IC50 values of 94.87 and 130.90 mg mL−1 for AChE and 262.55 and 279.70 mg mL−1 for BChE, respectively. These findings indicate that with the prominence of herbal treatments, T. citrina plant may guide the literature in treating Alzheimer's Disease, preventing oxidative damage, and mitochondrial dysfunction.

Traditional medicines, derived from medicinal plants, are used by about 60% of the world's population. Plants of the genus Terminalia which consist of about 200-250 species are widely used as traditional medicine. The aim of this study was that review morphologic and toxonomic characteristics, pharmacological effects, traditional usage and products that derived of Terminalia in reports that published up to 2017. To conduct this review, the most up-to-date electronic journals including those indexed in the Pubmed, Elsevier, Institute for Scientific Information, Google Scholar and Scientific Information Database, databases and various books, has been used. Terminalia species have therapeutic effects such as cardiac stimulant effect that was compared with that of digoxin. Terminalia species possess several active phytochemicals with antioxidant activities. β-sitosterol is one of phytosterol compounds that has a therapeutic effect on inflammation by effect on prostacyclin I2 (PGI2) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Other active phytochemical are tannins that have shown that tannins have strong anti-bacterial properties. Considering that many studies have been carried out on Terminalia plants in different fields and its beneficial effects in various diseases. To identify phytochemical compounds, further studies are required to fully determine the extent of use of medicinal plants and the phytochemistry of the genus Terminalia. In this review article can be a preliminary authentic source for the researchers to investigate the some unknown potential and therapeutic effects of these medicinal plants.

Objective: Combretaceae, a large family, includes more valuable species that are used against many diseases and disorders along with cancer therapy. Cancer is a very common lethal disease throughout the world. Keeping this in view, two species are Combretum roxburghii Spreng and Terminalia catappa L. selected for present studies to provide baseline data for future formulation. Methods: Phytochemicals were detected in different extracts of experimental plants. The cytotoxicity was tested using a Brine shrimp assay. The presence of both total phenol and total tannin content was estimated by standard spectrophotometric methods. Results: Terminalia catappa L. showed the presence of a number of natural bioactive compounds than Combretum roxburghii Spreng. The lethality test indicated maximum in Combretum roxburghii Spreng. (leaf) in methanol extract and Terminalia catappa L. in acetone extract (leaf). The highest concentration of total phenol and tannin content was observed in Combretum roxburghii Spreng. Conclusion: Phytochemical test, cytotoxicity test, total phenol & tannin content indicated the pharmacological potential and preventive characters against cancer and formulation of future drugs.
