Phytochemical Profile, Chemotaxonomic Studies, and In Vitro Antioxidant Activities of Two Endemisms from Madeira Archipelago: Melanoselinum decipiens and Monizia edulis (Apiaceae)

Abstract: Melanoselinum decipiens and Monizia edulis (Apiaceae) are two endemic plants from Madeira archipelago, phytochemical compositions of which remains little explored, despite their use in folk medicine. Using liquid chromatography with diode array and electrospray ionization/mass spectrometry analysis, their polyphenolic profile was established for the first time. Fifty-six compounds were identified with 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid, quercetin-O-(malonyl)hexoside, luteolin diacetyl, and quercetin-O-hexoside being the … Show more

“…2 and 3 (λ = 330 nm; [M-H] − m/z 473) were inferred to be apigenin-(acetyl)hexoside, confirmed by the presence of a fragment at m/z 269, corresponding to apigenin aglycone with the loss of 42 amu (acetyl moiety). These findings are consistent with the same compounds occurring in other Apiaceae species from Turkey and from Madeira Archipelago [29,30]. Concerning the other two apigenin derivatives, the one detected at t R of 26.30 min (peak no.…”

“…9, which are phenolic acids derivatives. 10 out of them were previously reported among the polyphenolic content of Apiaceae plants [7, 29–35], and only one, for example, peak no. 4, luteolin‐glucoside in edible A. leucotrichus from Algerian Sahara.…”

“…Finally, a megastigmane derivative with molecular ion [M−HCOOH] − at m / z 431 ( Fig. 10 ) was tentatively assigned to roseoside ( Spinola & Castilho, 2016 ). It was not possible to confirm the assignation and to quantify of this compound because of the unavailability of a commercial reference standard.…”

“…The known furanocoumarins: 8-[(R)-6′,7′-dihydroxygeranyloxy]psoralen (4) (Ito et al, 1998;Row et al, 2006), xanthotoxol (5) (He et al, 2007), xanthotoxin (6) (Harkar et al, 1984), (R)-(+)heraclenin ( 7) (Setzer et al, 2003), (R)-(+)-byakangelicol ( 8) (Setzer et al, 2003), (R)-(+)byakangelicin ( 9) (Ngwendson et al, 2003), phellopterin (10) (Kang et al, 2008); and the coumarins (R)-(+)-marmin ( 11) (Coates and Melvin, 1970) and rutaretin ( 12) (Lemmich and Shabana, 1984) were also isolated. Several other known compounds such as vanillin (Youssef and Frahm, 1995), vanillic acid (Kwon and Lee, 2001), β-hydroxypropiovanillone (Karonen et al, 2004), isorhamnetin (Spinola and Castilho, 2016), apigenin (Kouichi et al, 2011), and biochanin A (Agrawal and Bansal, 1989) were isolated along with the mixtures: stigmaste ro l and β-sitosterol (50-50%) (Hammoud et al, 2018), daucosterol and stigmasterol 3-O-βglucopyranoside (72-28%) (Voutquene and Lavaud, 1999). The structures of these known compounds were confirmed by comparison of their spectroscopic data (MS and 1 H-and 13 C-NMR) with the literature.…”
