Phytochemical parameters and antioxidant activity of new cherry silverberry biotypes (Elaeagnus multiflora Thunb.)

Abstract: This paper analyses the phytochemical composition, and antioxidant activity of new selected biotypes of cherry silverberry grown in Poland. In addition, the polyphenolic contents, sugars, and vitamin C, as well as organic acid profile were evaluated. Among the researched compounds, two sugars, seven organic acids, and six fatty acids were reported in new studied biotypes of cherry silverberry. Some new biotypes presented a high contents of vitamin C, linoleic, α-linoleic acids (si1, and si2), glucose, fructose… Show more

“…Fruits of this species, being suitable for direct consumption and processing, have been ascribed health-promoting properties [2,3]. Today, this species is grown in the eastern part of the United States and in Europe, including Poland, as not only an ornamental plant but also a plant usable for homemade processing [4,5]. As demonstrated in the study conducted by Bieniek et al [4], this plant grows very well in the moderate climate of Poland and is characterized by the ease of cultivation and resistance to diseases.…”

“…After 10 min of reaction, absorbance was measured at 734 nm for ABTS and 593 nm for FRAP. Determinations by ABTS and FRAP methods were performed using a UV-2401 PC spectrophotometer (Shimadzu, Kyoto, Japan) [5]. All antioxidant assays were performed in triplicate and expressed as mmol of TE per 100 g d.w.…”
