Phytochemical Composition of Tridax procumbens Linn Leaves: Potential as a Functional Food

Abstract: The leaves of Tridax procumbens were screened for the presence of bioactive molecules. They had high flavonoids, alkaloids, hydroxycinnamates, tannins and phytosterols, moderate benzoic acid derivatives and lignans, and low carotenoids contents. Thirty nine known alkaloids (mainly akuammidine, 68.756%), twenty three known flavonoids (mainly 17.593% kaempferol and 12.538% (−)-epicatechin), five known carotenoids (mainly lutein, 62.608%), four known benzoic acid derivatives (mainly ferulic acid, 46.091%), two ph… Show more

“…The hydroxycinnamates' extraction was carried out according to the method of Ortan, Popescu, Gaita, Dinu-Pîrvu, and Câmpeanu (2009). The sample was extracted thrice with methanol, and the pooled extract was concentrated and subjected to gas chromatographic analysis, with similar conditions as earlier reported by Ikewuchi, Ikewuchi, and Ifeanacho (2015). The lignans' extract was prepared according to the method of Chapman, Knoy, Kindscher, Brown, and Niemann (2006), and subjected to gas chromatography with similar conditions as earlier reported by Ikewuchi, Ikewuchi, and Ifeanacho (2014).…”

“…Meanwhile, phytochemical screening for Chromolaena odorata revealed the presence of tannins, steroids, terpenoids, flavonoids, phenols, saponins and glycosides (Vijayaraghavan et al, 2013;Obot et al, 2012). Tridax procumbens on the other hand has been reported to contain high flavonoids, alkaloids, hydroxycinnamates, tannins and phytosterols and moderate benzoic acid derivatives and lignans (Ikewuchi et al, 2015).…”
