Phytochemical and Morphological Attributes of Borage (<i>Borago officinalis</i>) Affected by Salicylic Acid as an Enhancer

Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine the response of borage (Borago officinalis) phytochemical and morphological attributes in relation to application of different levels of salicylic acid. Borage planted in pots and salicylic acid was sprayed on the shoots at concentrations of 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mM with 6 replications in a completely randomized block design. Morphological attributes such as shoot height, shoot dry matter, flower dry matter, flower weight and shoot wet weight were measured. In the oth… Show more

“…In most indicators of vegetative growth, the result of increasing the concentration of salicylic acid and the sprayed amino acids could be due to the role of salicylic acid in improving the growth of plants by regulating the reactions of the carbonic metabolism process through its effects on the process of opening and closing stomata and controlling the transpiration process (24). Salicylic acid contributes to the formation of chlorophyll pigment and activates the enzymes necessary for growth, which increases cell division and increases their numbers, thus increasing plant growth (2,18,35), and improves the health status of plants by increasing the production of oxidants (25).…”

“…With regard to the impact of the Variety, the results showed the superiority of the local red variety over the local white variety due to the genetic difference of these varieties and their involvement with the prevailing environmental factors in the region [15]. )As for the treatment of spraying with roselle extract, it was morally superior because it contains ascorbic acid and binary phenols, which act as antioxidants, in addition to containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium elements, as potassium is an enzymatic activator, as well as magnesium, which is important in the stability of ribosomes, in which protein is synthesized, and is the heart of the chlorophyll molecule [19] in addition to encouraging photosynthesis, respiration, regulating the activity of plant hormones and encouraging cell division [20].…”

“…Among medicinal plants, German borage (Borago officinalis L.) is one of the oldest medicinal plants used all over the world. German borage is an annual herb in the flowering plant family Boraginaceae and is native to the Mediterranean region and central Europe (Akbarpour et al, 2014). German borage is bristly or hairy all over its stems and leaves (El hafid et al, 2002).…”
