Effect of plantain (Musa paradisiaca (L) AAB genomic group) peel and stalk extracts were investigated using percentage inhibition test. Complete inhibition of growth (100%) was observed for Aspergillusniger, Aspergillus oryzae and Rhizopus stolonifer at 1.0 mg/ml concentration of stalk extract. Peel extract inhibited A. niger 100%, A. oryzae 76.67% and R. stolonifer 56.67% at the same concentration. As concentration reduces, growth inhibition reduces also up to the minimum inhibitory concentration. The results of this work justify that the plant extracts were able to inhibit and kill the growth of spoilage fungi and this implies that the extract in appropriate doses can be used in food preservation and to treat infections caused by this spoilage fungi. The results further justify the claim that Musa paradisiaca (L) stalk and peel extract demonstrated antifungal action in which methanol was seen to be a better solvent for extracting active ingredients from medicinal plants considering the high susceptibility of test organisms to methanol extract than ethanol extract used in this study. Phytochemical screening showed the presence of hydrogen cyanide, tannin, alkaloid, steroid, saponin and flavonoid. The growth inhibition of A. niger, A. oryzae and R. stolonifer by Musa paradisiaca peel and stalk methanol and ethanol extract in this study suggest the presence of antifungal substance in the plant tissue and the possibility of using the extract to control plant pathogens especially where the spoilage fungi used in this study are involved.

Biosorption studies were conducted to study the removal of Ni(II), Cr(III), and Co(II) from aqueous solution of Acalypha hispida leaf. e FTIR spectral characteristics of Acalypha hispida leaf revealed the presence of ioniazable groups that could participate in the binding of metal ions in solution. e kinetic, equilibrium, and thermodynamic studies of the biosorption of the metal ions were investigated using various physicochemical parameters; each parameter was found to affect the biosorption process. e kinetic studies showed that the biosorption process was best represented by pseudo-second-order kinetics among four kinetic models tested. Equilibrium data were better represented by Freundlich isotherm among Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. e study on the effect of dosage showed that the dosage of the biomass signi�cantly affected the uptake of the metal ions from solution. ermodynamic parameters such as standard Gibbs-free energy (Δ ∘ ), standard enthalpy (Δ ∘ ), standard entropy (Δ ∘ ), and the activation energy ( were calculated. e order of spontaneity of the biosorption process was found to be Cr(III) > Ni(II) > Co(II). e activation energy for the biosorption of each of the metal ions was less than 42 kJmol −1 at 323 K indicating that each was a diffusion-controlled process.

Subchronic Toxicity of Malaysian Acalypha Indica: Biochemistry and Haematology Analysis of Rat

Acalypha indica is one of the medicinal plants that have been used since ages to treat various diseases such as pneumoniae, asthma and skin diseases. This study aimed to explore the subchronic toxicity effect of Acalypha indica on Sprague Dawley rats based on haematological and biochemical parameters. The extract of Acalypha indica was prepared by aqueous extraction technique. 48 Sprague Dawley rats aged 7 weeks, weighing 150-200g were randomly divided into four groups, 6 animals per gender. A control group received water vehicle while three treated groups received the extract at dosage of 100 (low dosage group), 200 (medium dosage group) and 300 (high dosage group) mg/kg body weight. The sample was administered orally by using oral gavage daily for 90 days. No sign of toxicity and mortality was recorded in all groups throughout the study. There were no significant different (p>0.05) in body weight gain, food and water intake between control and treatment group. However, there was significant different in uric acid between control and high dosage group of male and female rats but the mean were in normal range. There were also reduced in mean of urea and creatinine in all dosage group of male and urea for all dosage group of female. Statistically significant reduced in urea was recorded between control and high dosage group of male only. Other parameters showed no significant different between control and treatment groups. Therefore, Acalypha indica is safe for human consumption and might be potential in reducing kidney damage problem.
