This attempt was assigned to evaluate the phytochemical constituents, antifungal, antibacterial and cytotoxicity of eleven medicinal plants from Bhandhara area. The phytochemicals such as steroids, anthraquinone, tannins, saponin, alkaloids, phlobatannin, glycosides, quinine and flavonoids were tested qualitatively. Antifungal, antibacterial and cytotoxicity was evaluated with the respective strains in laboratory condition. The total contents of flavonoids were examined quantitatively in eleven plant species and showed maximum (23%) contents from Terminalia chebula (Retz) followed by Vitex nigundo (L). The antibacterial, antifungal and cytotoxicity were conducted. The highest antibacterial potential was revealed from the extracts of Termanalia chebula (Retz) against E. coli, followed by Glycyrrhiza glabra (L) to Pseudomonas pudita. Antifungal activity of eleven plants was tested against the four fungal strains and showed that highest potentials in Termanalia chebula (Retz) while followed by Vitex nigundo (L) and Bacopa mannieri (L). The cytotoxicity was reported on chick embryo cell line against eleven species for their establishment and two species were showed high percent viability fromTerminalia chebula (Retz) (72.2%) followed by Acacia catechu (L.) (65.8%). The viability varies species to species. The phytochemicals are the indicatives of the plant species could be a possible source of obtaining new and effective source of herbal medicine.The antibacterial, antifungal potential activities are better source for further herbal medicine.

Identification of wild collected mosquito vectors of diseases using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry in Jazan Province, Saudi Arabia

Thirty-three species of mosquitoes have been reported from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Several of these mosquitoes, Anopheles gambiae Giles s.l., Anopheles stephensi Liston, Culex pipiens Linnaeus, Culex quinquefasciatus Say, Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles, Stegomyia aegypti (Linnaeus) and Aedimorphus vexans arabiensis (Patton) are known vectors of human and animal diseases. In this study, the cuticular hydrocarbon profiles of eight mosquito species using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were analyzed. Wild collected fourth-instar larvae were reared, and single, newly emerged, unfed adult females were used for the analysis. A total of 146-160 peaks were detected from the cuticular extracts by gas chromatography. Repeated analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey HSD Post Hoc test was used to test for quantitative differences in relative hydrocarbon quantity. In addition, a linear regression model was applied using Enter method to determine the diagnostic peaks for the eight mosquito specimens. The ANOVA test indicated that relative peaks were significant (P < 0.05) when selected pairs of peaks were compared. Also, seven compounds showed qualitative differences among the five mosquito vectors tested. The classes of constituents present were n-alkanes, monomethylalkanes, dimethylalkanes, trimethylalkanes, alkenes, branched aromatic hydrocarbons, aldehydes and esters. These compounds have a carbon chain length ranging from 8 to 18 carbons. The most abundant compound in all adult mosquito specimens was n-hexylacrylate [retention time (RT) 6.73 min], which was not detected in Cx. pipiens. In Cx. pipiens, the most abundant peak was benzaldehyde (RT 2.98 min). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry is a suitable method to identify adult mosquitoes, especially from focal areas of public health concern such as Jazan Province, Saudi Arabia. This method allows a wide range of adult collected material to be identified with high accuracy.

Objective: This study was aimed on the analysis of cytotoxic and apoptotic action of Passiflora foetida followed by identification of the functional groups responsible for the activity. Methods:In this study, cytotoxic and apoptotic effect of methanol extract of P. foetida were analyzed by treating HeLa cell line cultures with different concentrations of the extract (25, 50, 75, 100, and 125 µg/ml), and thereby the activity was ratified by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and propidium iodide staining. The functional groups of the bioactive compounds for the effectiveness of the treatment were known by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR). Results:The cytotoxic activity was found to be increased in a dose-dependent manner with inhibitory concentration value of 21.55 µg/ml and showed an effective apoptosis. Further, FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of functional groups of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids, terpenoids, phenols and cardiac glycosides which might be responsible for the aforesaid activity. Conclusion:The cytotoxic and apoptotic action of P. foetida was proved to be very effective, and the tenable functional groups were identified.
