The genus Avicennia comprises eight species of mangrove trees that occur in intertidal zones of estuaries and seabeds found in tropical and temperate regions spanning throughout the world. The plants belonging to the genus have both ecological and economic benefits. Different parts of the plants have ethnomedicinal applications for treatment of various diseases such as cancer, diabetes, malaria, rheumatism, asthma, small pox and ulcer. Pharmacological investigations have revealed antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory activities and so on in these plants. The genus possesses some unique metabolites of varied chemicals classes, which are responsible for their wide range of pharmacological activities. The presence of different bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, saponins, tannins, glycosides and terpenoids has been detected. Hence, there is a great scope to discover new biological active phytochemicals from different mangrove species of genus Avicennia. Although many research articles have been published on various pharmacological aspects of different plants of the genus, no comprehensive review is yet available pertaining to their ethnomedicinal uses, chemical constituents and pharmacological activities. The present article discusses the diversity as well as distribution of different species of genus Avicennia along with an in-depth coverage of their ethnomedicinal uses, phytochemical and pharmacological profiles. The objective of this study is to extract, screen, isolate, and characterize the chemical constituents of Tephrosia vogelii and Commiphora schimperi. In the course of this study the stem bark of T. vogelii and resin of C. schimperi were collected from Areka Agricultural Research institute, Wolaita Zone and Konso, Gamo Gofa Zone, respectively. Phytochemical screening of the crude extract of T. vogelii revealed the presence of tannins, saponins, flavonoids, and terpenoids. Chromatographic separation of the methanolic crude extract of T. vogelii yielded the compound 8 (4, 5-dihydro-5, 5-dimethyl-4-oxofuran-3yl)-5-hydoxy-7-methoxy-2-phenyl-4H-chrome-4-one. The essential oil from the resin of C. schimperi was isolated by hydro-distillation and some of the components identified by means of GC and GC/MS analysis. The main components of the essential oil from C. schimperi were: α-pinene (73%) and β-pinene (17%). The resin was also subjected to extraction by petrol, ethyl acetate, and methanol. The components of C. schimperi were isolated using chromatographic techniques and attempts were made to identify the isolated substances. Analysis of the petrol extract of the resin of C. schimperi showed to be an excellent source of the industrially important fragrant compounds, α-and β-pinene. The structures of the isolated compounds were characterized by comparing IR, 1 H NMR, and 13 C NMR chromatographic data of the compounds with literature.

Research interest towards herbal medicine grabs major attention in recent times due to its innumerable role in the process of drug discovery. It is evident that traditional medicines contribute as a therapeutic ailment for treating dreadful disease. Present investigation aimed at exploring the major phytocomponents present in the herb Strychnos potatorum (SP) and to screen its possible anti-microbial activity against selective pathogens. Ethanol (EESP), Aqueous (AESP) and Hydro alcoholic (HAESP) extracts were screened using biochemical, GCMS and FTIR analysis. Outcome of the study clearly signifies the presence of bioactive components such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, phenols and saponin in the extracts. Results of GCMS justify the existence of ascorbic, oleic and erucic acid in EESP. Further higher level of active components was reports in EESP. FTIR study evidents the presence of major active functional groups in the extracts. Anti-microbial evaluation reveals that the EESP exhibits maximum zone of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis and Klebsiella pneumonia. Present study provides an evidencebased data's with respect to the category and nature of phytocomponents present in the herb Strychnos potatorum and hence the promising anti-microbial activity may due to its biologically active phyto therapeutics which may render beneficial activity against infectious and cardiovascular diseases subjected to proper preclinical justification in near future.
