Physodes and the Phenolic Compounds of Brown Algae. Composition and Significance of Physodes in vivo

Abstract: The composition and significance of physodes, brown algal subcellulai bodies characterized by reactivity with vanillin-hydrochloric acid, have been the subject of debate for the past Century. This research is critically reviewed, and it is demonstrated that aJthough physodes aie primarily composed of phloroglucinol derivatives, they may also contain other tannins and terpenes. The recent discoveries of homologous series of phloroglucinol polymers in brown algal extracts provide an attractive chemical rationali… Show more

“…Although phenolic compounds are thought to have some antifouling properties (Sieburth & Conover 1965), phenolics in brown algae are contained in sealed vesicles called physodes (Ragan 1976). In the epiphytic association studied here, potential toxic effects of contacting polyphenolic compounds may be minimized by the thick, heavy calcification of Lichenopora novae-zelandiae colonies, a s well a s by biological membranes surrounding physodes.…”

“…They occur in cells in vesicles known as physodes and are also deposited in cell walls Clayton, 1998a, 1999). Their functional significance has been the subject of some debate for well over a century (see Ragan, 1976;Ragan and Glombitza, 1986;Schoenwaelder, 2002a). However, it is only in the past few years that the probability that phlorotannins have multiple roles has been acknowledged Targett, 2002, 2003).…”
