Physiotherapy scoliosis-specific exercises – a comprehensive review of seven major schools

Abstract: In recent decades, there has been a call for change among all stakeholders involved in scoliosis management. Parents of children with scoliosis have complained about the so-called “wait and see” approach that far too many doctors use when evaluating children’s scoliosis curves between 10° and 25°. Observation, Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercises (PSSE) and bracing for idiopathic scoliosis during growth are all therapeutic interventions accepted by the 2011 International Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic … Show more

“…The goal of this therapy is to repetitively recruit reflexive postural muscle control while the patients perform a conscious activity ( i.e ., balancing on the vestibular disc), thus making the postural adaptations to the externally applied weight automatic, reflexive responses instead of voluntary muscle recruitment patterns such as those used in other types of scoliosis-specific exercise protocols. 16 …”

“…5,6 This strategy uses various exercises, depending on the approach, that train a partnership between activation and strengthening of the deep stabilizing muscles of the spine and the core, in partnership with breathing strategies to guide the patient to a more centered alignment, then train endurance to maintain it in daily function. 7 There are a number of different approaches that exist under the umbrella of PSSE. The most widely researched are Schroth and the scientific exercise approach to scoliosis.…”

“…• global trunk extensors and hip extensors, knee extensors Novel theory hypothesizing relationship between low PI and femoral acetabular impingement (FAI) [33] Low PI → anterior pelvic tilt with gait → artificial anterior acetabular over coverage and recurrent FAI that increases risk for CAM morphology Table 1. Common sagittal alignment faults and predicted impairments.…”
