Physiology and Endocrinology of Hot Flashes in Prostate Cancer

Abstract: mechanisms of hot flashes to develop better therapeutic treatment options to ameliorate side effects of hormonal treatment. Studies are needed to investigate all aspects of hot flashes in populations other than those with breast cancer, such as men with prostate cancer, carcinoid tumors, medullary thyroid tumors, pancreatic islet-cell tumors, renal cell carcinoma, and phenochromocytoma.

“…Constriction and dilation of blood vessels is the primary method by which core body temperature is adjusted. 25 Findings for other SNPs are in line with previous studies showing associations between neurotransmission and inflammation 26 as well as between inflammation and hot flashes. 27, 28 The potential role of mutations on genes associated with vasoconstriction, neurotransmission, and immune function in moderating the impact of ADT on HFI merits further investigation.…”

“…Hot flashes are troublesome vasomotor symptoms caused by gender hormone withdrawal that can be caused by androgen depravation therapy (ADT) [2], in breast cancer survivors after chemo/hormonal therapy [3], or naturally in menopausal women [4]. Several reports show that hot flashes are identical in both sexes [5,6] making their study a model disease condition for the evaluation of medical and non-pharmacologic interventions. Along with the vasomotor events, a constellation of other debilitating symptoms occur including fatigue, weight gain, anxiety and depression, loss of libido, and changes of patterns or disruption of sleep.…”

“…Symptoms occur in 50–80% of men undergoing ADT and are considered the most bothersome symptom among 27% of patients . Although the exact etiology for vasomotor symptoms with ADT remains unclear, it may be related to the absence of negative feedback from sexual hormones on the hypothalamus, resulting in thermoregulatory dysfunction and neurogenic‐mediated vascular dilation .…”
