Physiological Responses and Physical Performance during Football in the Heat

Abstract: PurposeTo examine the impact of hot ambient conditions on physical performance and physiological responses during football match-play.MethodsTwo experimental games were completed in temperate (∼21°C; CON) and hot ambient conditions (∼43°C; HOT). Physical performance was assessed by match analysis in 17 male elite players during the games and a repeated sprint test was conducted after the two game trials. Core and muscle temperature were measured and blood samples were obtained, before and after the games.Resul… Show more

“…Although it's important to remain pragmatic, as match running performance is complex as factors such as context (Castellano, Blanco-Villasenor, & Alvarez, 2011), technical level (Rampinini, Impellizzeri, Castagna, Coutts, & Wisloff, 2009), formation (Bradley et al, 2011), the opponent (Rampinini, Coutts, Castagna, Sassi, & Impellizzeri, 2007), seasonal period (Rampinini et al, 2007), fatigue/pacing (Bradley & Noakes, 2013), surface (Andersson, Ekblom, & Krustrup, 2008) and the environment (Mohr, Nybo, Grantham, & Racinais, 2012), all interact and impact on match running performances. Another factor thought to impact on the physical demands of match play is team BP.…”

“…The physical demands of elite match play are well reported with factors such as physical capacity (Krustrup et al, , 2005, context (Castellano, Blanco-Villasenor, & Alvarez, 2011), technical level (Rampinini, Impellizzeri, Castagna, Coutts, & Wisløff, 2009), team formation (Bradley et al, 2011), the standard of opponent (Rampinini, Coutts, Castagna, Sassi, & Impellizzeri, 2007), seasonal period Rampinini et al, 2007), fatigue/pacing (Bradley & Noakes, 2013), surface (Andersson, Ekblom, & Krustrup, 2008) and the environment (Mohr, Nybo, Grantham, & Racinais, 2012) potentially impacting on match running performances. Despite this coverage, there is limited evidence supporting a link between success in soccer and match running performance or physical capacity (Apor, 1988;Rampinini et al, 2007).…”
