Physiological reactivity to psychological stress in human pregnancy: Current knowledge and future directions

Abstract: Cardiovascular and neuroendocrine reactivity to acute stress are important predictors of health outcomes in non-pregnant populations. Greater magnitude and duration of physiological responses have been associated with increased risk of hypertensive disorders and diabetes, greater susceptibility to infectious illnesses, suppression of cell-mediated immunity as well as risk for depression and anxiety disorders. Stress reactivity during pregnancy has unique implications for maternal health, birth outcomes, and fe… Show more

“…Overall these data suggest that stress responses are attenuated during healthy pregnancy. for review see 25, 26 Similar attenuation of responsivity has been reported in animal models. 2729 These adaptations may be critical from protecting the mother and fetus from excessive exposure to physiological activation.…”

“…Pregnancy creates substantial hormonal and physiological changes, is often followed by stressful social and transitions and is a vulnerable time for onset of mental disorders (1). Although post partum depression has been extensively evaluated, less is known about occurrence and biological determinants of suicide risk (SR) and major depression episode (MDE) in early pregnancy.…”

“…Some methods that have been used to measure the different facets of stress include psychologic measures, often measured with a questionnaire, and physiologic markers, measured by saliva or blood. These biologic samples can be difficult to obtain, are costly to analyze, and are equivocally linked to stress (16-20). Overall, questionnaires are a more cost-efficient way to measure stress; however, although questionnaires are developed and validated to measure specific aspects of stress in certain populations, it can be difficult to determine the actual construct being measured or the construct validity.…”
