Physiological Aspects of Male Libido Enhanced by Standardized Trigonella foenum‐graecum Extract and Mineral Formulation

Abstract: The aim of the clinical study was to evaluate the effect of Testofen, a standardized Trigonella foenum-graecum (Fenugreek) extract and mineral formulation, on male libido (sexual drive, urge or desire) in a double blind randomized placebo controlled study. The study recruited 60 healthy males aged between 25 and 52, without erectile dysfunction and randomized to an oral dose (two tablets per day) of the active treatment (600 mg Testofen per day) or placebo for 6 weeks. The primary outcome measure was the DISF-… Show more

“…Our results are supported by those of two previous studies. One study focused on younger men using the same Trigonella foenum-graecum seed extract, which was found to have a positive effect on sexual function in men experiencing low libido [8]. In the other study, Rao et al [9] found that Testofen, a specialized Trigonella foenum-graecum seed extract, reduced age-related symptoms of androgen decrease, increased testosterone levels, and improved sexual function in healthy aging males in a double-blind randomized clinical study.…”

“…Previous studies have suggested that Trigonella foenum-graecum seed extract has positive effects on sexual health and quality of life, and that it demonstrates anabolic and androgenic activity in young patients [8]. It is believed that these positive effects are due to increased testosterone, and that Trigonella foenum-graecum seed extract can be an effective treatment for the TDS in aging men.…”

“…DHT levels were reduced in the fenugreek group. Other studies demonstrate that fenugreek either causes no change or slightly increases testosterone in men have been for those with an already normal testosterone at baseline [219,220]. In other words, it is an unpredictable supplement in the area of TRT.…”

“…In other words, it is an unpredictable supplement in the area of TRT. One clinical trial of fenugreek of 500 mg per day (standardized for Grecunin) over 8 weeks showed an average increases of 6.6 and 12.3 % for total testosterone and bioavailable testosterone [219]. Even if fenugreek operates as an aromatase inhibitor, as explained earlier in this chapter, I do not recognize this as a positive mechanism of action because it could cause bone loss in healthy men based on some past clinical trials of prescription drugs that have this same mechanism of action.…”

“…Because the subject population of this study consisted of young college-aged males (21.4 ± 2.95) it may be beneficial to conduct a follow-up study utilizing older men. Another study found that a fenugreek formulation improved certain aspects of libido and quality of life in a sample of healthy men [104]. Potential mechanisms explaining an increase in testosterone due to fenugreek supplementation are currently unknown and may be explained to a greater extent providing future research is conducted in this area.…”
