Physiological and Pathological Functions of SLC26A6

Abstract: Solute Carrier Family 26 (SLC26) is a conserved anion transporter family with 10 members in human (SLC26A1-A11, A10 being a pseudogene). All SLC26 genes except for SLC26A5 (prestin) are versatile anion exchangers with notable ability to transport a variety of anions. SLC26A6 has the most extensive exchange functions in the SLC26 family and is widely expressed in various organs and tissues of mammals. SLC26A6 has some special properties that make it play a particularly important role in ion homeostasis and acid… Show more

“…NKCC1 provides chlorine for apical secretion through CFTR by mediating chloride uptake at the basolateral pole of intestinal epithelial cells [ 96 ]. SLC26 is a conservative anion transporter family, and SLC26A6 has the most extensive exchange function in the family; it mediates the transport of Cl − /HCO 3 − and other anions, and plays an important role in ion homeostasis and acid-base balance [ 102 ]. Therefore, our results show that PP-MP exposure affects ion transport in the intestinal tract of mice.…”

“…Genes C3 and C5 , as components of complement system, were specifically found in pig ileum (C4). Anion transporter SLC26A6 , mediating chloride absorption and bicarbonate secretion in the small intestine (Seidler et al, 2008 ; Wang et al, 2020a ), was expressed in mouse and rat ileum (C5). The aspartic protease NAPSA was enriched in rat ileum, consistent with protein proteolysis in functional enrichment analysis (C6).…”

“…In EOs, strong Slc26a6 expression was found at both the mRNA and protein level, whereas Slc26a3 expression was weak and non-specific. The Slc26a6 transporter is primarily located on the apical membrane of secretory epithelial cells, in which it plays an essential role in HCO 3 − secretion (29). Because the esophageal epithelium is not a typical secretory epithelium, the presence of this transporter on EOs is unusual.…”
