Physiological and Nutritional Responses to Ozone Application in Tomato Seedling Plants

Abstract: Research on environmentally friendly techniques for the agroindustry is growing constantly. In this sense, the supply of ozone (O3) has been taken into consideration, especially for disinfection because of its high oxidizing power. However, there is not enough information about the application of dissolved O3 via fertigation in crops. For that reason, in this study, two trials were carried out simultaneously to determine the consequences of O3 application on plant growth and quality of tomato plants. The first… Show more

“…Plants respond differently to the actions of stress factors, depending on the characteristics of the species, cultivar, etc. ; from this point of view, there are species or cultivars that are either resistant or sensitive to the action of a stress factor [10]. Extended periods of drought, reduced river flow, lower lake levels, and falling water tables all have a major detrimental impact on the economy in general and on the agricultural sector in particular.…”

“…This causes the reduction of the leaf surface, which is one of the ways by which plants reduce their water losses from the tissues, preventing dehydration and cell death [10]. Plant growth is the result of the process of cell division, as well as increasing their volume, size, and mass [11]. Thermal stress can directly influence plant growth through the effect it has on the development of this process, but also indirectly, through the action it has on the development of other physiological processes (photosynthesis, transpiration, respiration, etc.…”

“…The ozone source used generated a mixture of ozone and molecular oxygen (O 2 ), which resulted from the fact that input gas material was provided to the generator from an oxygen concentrator. The use of water saturated with ozone had a positive effect on the biometric parameters of tomato plants [ 15 ]. Ozone and ozonated water can have a positive impact on the microbiological status of young plants.…”
