Physiological and Molecular Osmotic Stress Responses in Three Durum Wheat (Triticum Turgidum ssp Durum) Genotypes

Abstract: This study aims to investigate the activities and expression of enzymes of primary metabolism and relate these data with the growth performance of three different durum wheat genotypes (Maali; YT13; and ON66) under osmotic stress. Growth traits-including plant height, dry weight (DW) and relative water content (RWC)-were measured to classify genotypes depending on their tolerance to stress. Several enzymes were investigated: Ascorbate peroxidase (APX), Glutamine Synthetase (GS), Glutamine dehydrogenase (GDH), … Show more

“…Numerous publications investigate the effect of a single stress factor (low or high temperature, salinization, radiation, herbicides, water or mineral deficiency, heavy metals, etc.) on the physiological status of the plant and/or the possibility of reducing the impact of the stress [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. Under natural conditions, however, plants are rarely exposed to a single stress factor.…”

“…Correspondingly, PPDK catalyzes the phosphoenolpyruvate regeneration phase of the C 4 carbon xation pathway [43]. Our ndings revealed that PEPC and PPDK proteins were considerably decreased to cope with water stress in SD609 and SD902, respectively, as was the case in maize and wheat [43,44]. It is noteworthy that the reduced levels of PPDK in SD902 could perhaps also associated with a greater plant susceptibility to drought due to this enzyme involving in the production of NADPH, which is an important component of various cell antioxidative and osmoprotective mechanisms.…”

“…Interestingly, GDH operates by linking abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, and heavy metal poisoning with nutrient starvation [70]. This association has been reported as a connection between metabolic adaptations and the protection of plants against ammonium accumulation; the presence of a molecular regulation of specific GDH isoenzymes induced by abiotic stresses and carbohydrate starvation was suggested [71].…”
