In arid and hyper-arid areas, groundwater is a precious and rare resource. The need for water supply has grown over the past few decades as a result of population growth, urbanization, and agricultural endeavors. This research aims to locate groundwater recharge potential zones (GWPZs) using multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) in the Wadi Qena Basin, Eastern Desert of Egypt, which represents one of the most promising valleys on which the government depends for land reclamations and developments. These approaches have been used to integrate and delineate the locations of high groundwater recharge and the potential of the Quaternary aquifer in the Wadi Qena basin. After allocating weight factors to identify features in each case based on infiltration, land use/land cover, slope, geology, topology, soil, drainage density, lineament density, rainfall, flow accumulation, and flow direction, these thematic maps were combined. The results of the GIS modeling led to the division of the area’s groundwater recharge potential into five groups, ranging from very high (in the western part) to very low (in the eastern part of the basin). The zones with the best prospects for groundwater exploration turned out to be the alluvial and flood plains, with their thick strata of sand and gravel. The groundwater recharge potential map was validated using data from the field and earlier investigations. The promising recharging areas show high suitability for soil cultivation. The results overall reveal that RS and GIS methodologies offer insightful instruments for more precise assessment, planning, and monitoring of water resources in arid regions and anywhere with similar setups for groundwater prospecting and management.

Egyptian Government focuses on development projects especially in new lands such as Sohag-Red Sea road to improve tourism and agricultural activities. This study aims to assess the actual and potential land productivity. Seventeen soil profiles were chosen depending on the six mapping units of the study area. Soil profiles were drilled and soil samples were collected from each horizon. Nine land characteristics were measured/estimated viz. soil moisture content (H), drainage (D), depth (P), texture (T), soluble salts content (S), average nutrient content (N), organic matter content (O), cationic exchange capacity (A) and reserves weatherable minerals (M). Soil samples were analyzed for their mentioned parameters using the standard methods of soil analysis. Accordingly, land productivity (PI) and potentiality (P⸌I) indices were calculated for all studied soil profiles. The results revealed that actual land productivity of the studied area is extremely poor and can be enhanced 17 times by improving soil moisture content, texture, and organic matter content as the most important controlling-factors. Actual and potential land productivity maps were generated using Arc GIS 10.1 software. These results may help decision-makers for new lands reclamation planning and better agricultural production.

An investigation was carried out to characterize and classify some soils from Wadi Qena, Eastern Desert, Egypt. Twelve representative profiles were chosen based on DEM extracted from the Landsat 8 ETM+ satellite image. The soils were moderately deep to deep in depth, well drained, slightly to strongly alkaline in soil reaction (pH 7.6 – 8.4), slight to moderate saline (EC 3.3- 15.4 dS.m-1). The soils were low in organic matter (0.09 – 0.65%), low in CEC (1.5–8.1 cmol (p+).kg-1) and calcium carbonates ranged from (1.2 – 18.2%). The results revealed that the soils were low in available N (1–21 kg.ha-1), low in available P (1.0 – 9 kg.ha-1), and low to high in available K (105 – 762 kg.ha-1). Further, the soils were low in available micronutrients. Soil classification of the investigated area is done according to the field survey, morphological description and soil analyses. Two soil orders, viz Entisols and Aridisols were recognized in the study area. The soils were keyed out as Typic Torripsamments and Typic Haplocalcids at subgroup level. The obtained results can be used by decision makers to focus on prospective agricultural areas and to achieve land reclamation and better agricultural production.
