Physio-Biochemical and Agronomic Responses of Faba Beans to Exogenously Applied Nano-Silicon Under Drought Stress Conditions

Abstract: Nano-silicon application is an efficient novel approach to mitigate the deleterious impacts of drought stress on field crops, which is expected to increase owing to climate change, especially in arid regions. Two-season field studies investigated the influence of foliar-applied nano-silicon (0.5, 1, and 1.5 mM) on physiological and biochemical attributes and their impacts on crop water productivity (CWP) and the agronomic traits of faba beans (Vicia faba). The plants were evaluated under two irrigation regimes… Show more

“…Reduction in photosynthetic attributes is a major early plant response to water deficit, which substantially diminishes metabolite accumulation and plant productivity 28 , 29 . Previous studies revealed a positive relationship between chlorophyll content and yield traits of faba bean 30 , 31 . Enhancing the expression of photosynthetic pigments is imperative to improve the yield traits of faba bean under drought stress.…”

“…Moreover, the significant G × I interaction obtained for most of the measured traits revealed differential performances of the genotypes under well-watered and water shortage conditions [ 51 ]. Drought is a pivotal environmental stress that detrimentally constraints rice growth and production [ 52 , 53 ]. The obtained results revealed that water deficit caused considerable reductions in all the evaluated characteristics compared to the well-watered condition, except for leaf rolling and the sterility percentage, which significantly increased.…”

“…SOD, POD and CAT enzymes either directly scavenge ROS or indirectly protect plants by regulating non-enzymatic defense mechanisms [112]. Drought stress boosted enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant activity in faba beans (Vicia faba) substantially more than the normal moisture condition [116].…”
