Physics of Human Crowds

Abstract: Understanding the behavior of human crowds is a key step toward a safer society and more livable cities. Despite the individual variability and will of single individuals, human crowds, from dilute to dense, invariably display a remarkable set of universal features and statistically reproducible behaviors. Here, we review ideas and recent progress in employing the language and tools from physics to develop a deeper understanding about the dynamics of pedestrians. Expected final online publication date for the… Show more

“…Understanding the kinematics of pedestrians is part of a challenging and broad multidisciplinary scientific effort with outstanding societal importance due to implications in crowd management [4] and urban design [12] and sharing deep fundamental challenges connected with active flowing matter and statistical physics [3,13]. One of the main obstacles in fully understanding crowd flows is the inherent technical challenge of obtaining measurements with sufficient spatiotemporal accuracy and statistical resolution, fully capturing the large variability and complexity of pedestrian kinematics.…”

“…Such models have yielded good results when used in tandem with path-finding algorithms to navigate autonomous agents 53 . More recent research has delved into the specific scenario of pairwise avoidance during face-to-face encounters among pedestrians, using real-life trajectory data 26,27,54 . They measured the deviation of pedestrians from their expected undisturbed trajectories when encoutering others (1vs1 and 1vsN scenarios) and compared the results to a Langevin-like physics model.…”
