“…Although we have introduced this approach for students following a generalist degree we see no reason why it should not equally well be applied to other degree and diploma courses in physics. In a period in which there seems to be a slow decline in the numbers of students opting for CNAA degree courses in physics, as pointed out by Pointon (1980), we are finding that the proportion of students opting for physics within the overall structure of our degree is showing signs of increasing. We hope to report in more detail on the development of the course, including the new honours syllabus, and student reaction to it, at a later date.…”
