Physics-Based Ground Motion Simulations for the Prediction of the Seismic Vulnerability of Masonry Building Compounds in Mirandola (Italy)

Abstract: The current paper aims at investigating the seismic capacity of a masonry building aggregate in the historical centre of Mirandola based on a reliable ground motion simulation procedure. The examined clustered building is composed of eleven structural units (SUs) mutually interconnected to each other, which are made of brick walls and are characterized by wooden floors poorly connected to the vertical structures. Non-linear static analyses are performed by adopting the 3Muri software to characterize the seismi… Show more

“…Several methodologies have been developed for performing seismic vulnerability assessments of structures (Calvi et al, 2006;Alam et al, 2012;Goded et al, 2018;Shakya et al, 2018;Fabbrocino et al, 2019;Kassem et al, 2020;Aghabeigi and Farahmand-Tabar, 2021;Chieffo et al, 2021;Shabani et al, 2021). These methodologies can be classified into analytical (D'Ayala and Speranza, 2003), empirical based on macroelement approach (De Matteis et al, 2020;Sangiorgio et al, 2021b), and integrated multidisciplinary approaches (Dall'Asta et al, 2019;Grazzini et al, 2020).…”

“…Thus, past researchers have used data from major recorded earthquakes in conjunction with engineering expertise for this task [7,8]. Similarly, for masonry buildings, both index-based [9] and physics-based [10] structural vulnerability assessment studies have been conducted. The effect of the structural parameters of this type of building on their structural vulnerability has been studied as well [11,12].…”

“…Therefore, the effect of the deep subsurface should be appropriately considered for a site-specific EGM evaluation [13,17,18]. In addition, if there was information on the 3D ground structure down to the deep subsurface, EGMs were estimated using physics-based models [19][20][21][22]. However, no data on the above were available; therefore, we focused only on the shallow subsurface amplification.…”
