Physicochemical Properties and Biological Activities of Garlic (Allium sativum L.) Bulb and Leek (Allium ampeloprasum L. var. Porrum) Leaf Oil Extracts

Abstract: Allium species including garlic and leek exhibits a broad range of medicinal and nutritional properties. Therefore, this study investigates the physicochemical and biological activities of garlic (Allium sativum L.) and leek (A. ampeloprasum L. var. Porrum) oil extracts. The result indicated that physicochemical properties indicated that significantly higher oil yield (21.25%), ACV (2.66 mg/g), FFA (1.34%), and PV (4.10 meq/kg) and also antioxidant activities with respect to 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, DPP… Show more

“…and Mkangara et al . [ 29 , 30 ] with some modifications, extracts of O. kilimandscharicum and silver nanoparticles were assessed to determine their bactericidal concentrations. A sterile swab was used to transfer the contents from wells (3 wells downstream) where no color changes had occurred to fresh sterile Petri plates for further incubation.…”

“…The least inhibitory concentration is the lowest concentration at which colony growth is inhibited. Extracts of O. kilimandscharicum and silver nanoparticles mediated were tested to find their bactericidal concentrations using the approach given by Lemma et al and Mkangara et al [28,29] with some modifications. Using a sterile swap, the well contents (3 wells downstream) in which no colour changes had occurred were moved to fresh sterile Petri plates and infected.…”

“…The nutritional characteristics of the different genotypes of commonly taken foods lead to the maintenance of food diversity and improve nutritional quality, particularly in mal-nutrition populations [ 7 ]. Consequently, garlic heals communicable diseases effectively [ 8 ]. Particularly, it has anti-bacterial [ 9 , 10 ], anti-cancer, anti -inflammantory, antihypercholestrolemic [ 10 ], anti-viral [ 10 ], and antioxidant [ 5 ], antifungal [ 11 ] activity than other Allium species due to its vinyldithiin [ 11 ], allicin [ 5 ], diallyl polysulfide [ 9 ], and ajoene [ 11 ].…”
