Biomass-derived raw bamboo charcoal (BC), NaOH-impregnated bamboo charcoal (BC-I), and magnetic bamboo charcoal (BC-IM) were fabricated and used as bio-adsorbents and Fenton-like catalysts for methylene blue removal. Compared to the raw biochar, a simple NaOH impregnation process significantly optimized the crystal structure, pore size distribution, and surface functional groups and increase the specific surface area from 1.4 to 63.0 m2/g. Further magnetization of the BC-I sample not only enhanced the surface area to 84.7 m2/g, but also improved the recycling convenience due to the superparamagnetism. The maximum adsorption capacity of BC, BC-I, and BC-IM for methylene blue at 328 K was 135.13, 220.26 and 497.51 mg/g, respectively. The pseudo-first-order rate constants k at 308 K for BC, BC-I, and BC-IM catalytic degradation in the presence of H2O2 were 0.198, 0.351, and 1.542 h−1, respectively. A synergistic mechanism between adsorption and radical processes was proposed.

Significant quantities of Fenton sludge (FS) are produced during the treatment of industrial wastewater from the plating industry because of the removal of residual organic matter and color‐causing substances. This study proposes repurposing waste FS as a valuable resource to contribute to environmentally favorable remediation initiatives. This study focuses on producing Fenton sludge biochar (FS‐BC), which effectively removes As(V) from wastewater and offers a sustainable solution for wastewater treatment. Different FS‐BC samples were produced at various pyrolysis temperatures (300–900 °C), with FS‐BC‐900 exhibiting the greatest As(V) adsorption capacity. As(V) removal was primarily mediated by electrostatic attraction with iron oxide, and adsorption via inner‐sphere complex formation, as revealed by the XPS analysis. FS‐BC‐900 had a remarkable maximum As(V) adsorption capacity of 148.7 mg/g (initial concentration: 100–900 mg/l; reaction time: 96 h; pH 7.86), surpassing many other adsorbents reported in the literature. FS‐BC‐900 also demonstrated a high As(V) removal percentage, with 6.67 g/l of FS‐BC‐900 removing 96.8% of the As(V). Notably, the adsorption of As(V) by FS‐BC‐900 was affected by certain factors, including pH and carbonate presence. High pH and carbonate inhibited the ability of FS‐BC‐900 to adsorb As(V). This study presents a novel method for utilizing FS to combat As(V)‐contaminated water‐induced environmental contamination. This study contributes to eco‐friendly and sustainable wastewater treatment and As(V) remediation strategies by transforming waste into valuable resources.

Optimization of the Pentachlorophenol Adsorption by Organo-Clays Based on Response Surface Methodology

The aim of this study is to optimize the adsorption of pentachlorophenol (PCP) using an organo-clay under the response surface methodology. The adsorbent was selected from a montmorillonite exchanged by various cations, such as Fe3+, Al3+, Zn2+, Mg2+, Na+, and modified by bromide cetyltrimethylammonium (CTAB) as surfactant. The obtained organo-montmorillonite was characterized using several techniques, such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and nitrogen adsorption, performed at −196 °C. The results showed an increase in basal space from 1.65 to 1.88 nm and a decrease in the specific surface and pore volume, with an increase in pore diameter, including the presence of characteristic bands of -CH2- and -CH3- groups at 2926 and 2854 cm−1 in the FTIR spectrum after the modification. The optimization of PCP removal by clay adsorbents is achieved using the response surface methodology (RSM) with a four-factor central composite model, including pH of solution, mass of adsorbent, contact time, and initial concentration. The results proved the validity of the regression model, wherein the adsorption capacity reaches its maximum value of 38 mg/g at a lower adsorbent mass of 20 mg, pH of 6, contact time (tc) of 5 h, and initial concentration of 8 mg/L.
