The universal scaling concept is applied to the low-temperature range of any liquid states and substances located between the melting ( ) and normal boiling ( ) points far away from the critical region. The physical reason to develop such approach is the revealed collapse of all low-temperature isotherms onto the single universal one argued by the model of fluctuational thermodynamics (FT) proposed recently by author. The pressure reduced by the molecular parameters of the effective short-range Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential depends here only on the reduced density. To demonstrate the extraordinary predictive abilities of the developed lowtemperature scaling model it has been applied to the prediction of equilibrium and transport (kinetic and dynamic viscosity, self-diffusion, and thermal conductivity) properties not only for molecular liquids but also for molten organic salts termed ionic liquids (ILs). The best argument in favor of the proposed methodology is the appropriate consistency with the scarce experiments prediction of transport coefficients for ILs on the base of universal scaling function constructed for the simplest LJ-like liquid argon. The only input data of any substance for prediction are the linear approximations of T-dependent density and isobaric heat capacity taken from the standard measurements at atmospheric pressure.

CeO2-TiO2 photocatalyst with Ce:Ti molar ratio of 1:9 was synthesized via co-precipitation method in the presence of 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium octylsulfate, [EMIM][OctSO4] (CeO2-TiO2-IL). The ionic liquid acts as a templating agent for particle growth. The CeO2-TiO2 and TiO2 photocatalysts were also synthesized without any ionic liquid for comparison. Calcination was conducted on the as-synthesized materials at 400 ˚C for 2 h. The photocatalysts were characterized using diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy (DR-UV-Vis), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and surface area and pore size analyzer (SAP). The presence of CeO2 has changed the optical property of TiO2. It has extended the absorption edge of TiO2 from UV to visible region. The calculated band gap energy decreased from 2.82 eV (TiO2) to 2.30 eV (CeO2-TiO2-IL). The FESEM morphology showed that samples forms aggregates and the surface smoothens when ionic liquid was added. The average crystallite size of TiO2, CeO2-TiO2, and CeO2-TiO2-IL were 20.8 nm, 5.5 nm, and 4 nm. In terms of performance, photodegradation of 1000 ppm of diisopropanolamine (DIPA) was conducted in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and visible light irradiation which was provided by a 500 W halogen lamp. The best performance was displayed by CeO2-TiO2-IL calcined at 400 ˚C. It was able to remove 82.0% DIPA and 54.8% COD after 6 h reaction.

Speed of sound of ionic liquids: Database, estimation, and its application for thermal conductivity prediction

Speed of sound is an important thermodynamic property of ionic liquids (ILs) and always chosen as a source to determine other properties. A database for the speed of sound of pure ILs created by collecting experimental data from literature covering the period from 2005 to 2013 is presented. The effects of temperature and the alkyl chain length on the speed of sound are discussed and a second-order corresponding states group contribution method is developed to estimate the speed of sound. An average absolute deviation (AAD) of 2.34% has been obtained. This method offers a simple but reliable approach to estimate the speed of sound of new ILs. Finally, the speed of sound is used to determine the thermal conductivity of ILs based on the Bridgman theory. The calculated values of thermal conductivity show a good agreement with the experimental ones with an AAD of 3.91%.
