Physicochemical and Microbiological Assessment of Selected Hand-Dug Wells for Water Quality in Ilesa Metropolis, Southwest Nigeria

Abstract: The present study investigated the physicochemical and microbiological assessment of selected hand-dug wells for water quality in Ilesa metropolis. The aim was to assess the groundwater quality. Twenty-five (25) hand-dug wells were randomly selected and water samples were collected four times spanning through the rainy and dry seasons. Physical parameters (ambient air temperature, water temperature, colour, turbidity and total dissolved solids), chemical (pH, conductivity, calcium, magnesium, total hardness, c… Show more

“…e temperature of the well water samples varied between 27.67°C and 28.30°C (Table 1). Similar studies conducted in selected Hand-Dug Wells for Water Quality in Ilesa Metropolis, Southwest Nigeria, scored temperature value of 28.04 ± 0.12°C [16]. e values of temperature for all well water samples were above the permissible limit of WHO for drinking water, 25°C [14].…”

“… 101 The design and condition of the hand-dug well could also influence its susceptibility to contamination and its ability to maintain dissolved oxygen levels. 102 , 103 Proper well construction, including adequate casing, wellhead protection, and sealing, can help minimize the entry of surface runoff and contaminants. Furthermore, there was a statistical difference among the variations observed at the various sampling points.…”
