Physicochemical and Biological Performance of Aloe Vera-Incorporated Native Collagen Films

Abstract: Collagen was obtained from porcine skin by mechanical pretreatments with the aim of preserving the triple helix structure of native collagen, which was indirectly corroborated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results. Moreover, aloe vera (AV), with inherent biological properties, was incorporated into collagen film formulations, and films were prepared by compression and characterized to assess their suitability for biomedical applications. “…The broad band at around 3500–2500 cm −1 can be assigned to amide A (N-H stretching) and OH in collagen [ 38 , 39 ]. Distinctive bands for collagen are also visible at 1631 cm −1 for amide I, which indicates C=O stretching, at 1541 cm −1 for amide II (N-H binding), and 1233 cm −1 for amide III (C-N bending).…”

“…Native collagen was obtained according to the method of Andonegi et al [ 26 ]. Firstly, porcine skins were defatted by immersion into 1 M NaOH solution for 12 h and then, neutralized in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) solution (pH = 7.4).…”

“…Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to determine the functional group's presence in membrane Hypericum perforatum (HP) oil-loaded chitosan in the form of cryogel for healing wounds. [69] Cryogels are three-dimensional structures produced by cryotropic gelation; by changing the quantity of H. perforatum oil, the pore size distribution of the composite cryogels can be varied.…”

“…Synergy, in this context, refers to the biochemical interactions between active ingredients in aloe vera and the body's coordinated reactions to these ingredients. [ 69 ] Aloe vera (AV) is a gel applied topically to treat lesions and has anti‐inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties. Microorganisms can be used as antifungals to prevent post‐harvest fungal infections since they also limit the growth of Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative bacteria.…”
