Physico-chemical quality of well and borehole water consumed in the commune of Bingerville (Ivory Coast)

Abstract

In Africa, more particularly in Côte d'Ivoire, the deficiency of drinking water is a major problem, due to galloping demographics, accompanied by poorly controlled urbanization and also strong anthropogenic pollution. The objective of this study is to know the level of groundwater pollution in the municipality of Bingerville. A total of 8 wells and 9 boreholes were subject to physicochemical measurements (temperature, pH, conductivity, turbidity, Total Dissolved Solids, nitrates, nitrites, ammonium). The choice of water points studied is based on their daily uses as drinking water. All parameters were analyzed according to AFNOR methods. The results of the analyzes show that the drilling waters are weakly mineralized with electrical conductivities ranging from 19.5 to 91.5 µS/cm, not very turbid (0.75 ≥ turbidity ≤ 1.5 TNU) and with variable oxygenation in space and time (1.91 to 6.09 mg/L). However, they have a slight acidity. Well water presents, in certain cases, indications of organic pollution and high mineralization with electrical conductivities reaching 1000 µS/cm in certain wells and boreholes.
