Physico-Chemical, Nutritional, and Sensory Evaluation of Two New Commercial Tomato Hybrids and Their Parental Lines

Abstract: Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is the globally most consumed vegetable. The objective of this research was to analyze physico-chemical, nutritional and sensorial components (taste and flavor) in two new commercial hybrids (AS 300 F1 and AS 400 F1) and their four F7 parental lines. Two widely grown F1 hybrids (Precos F1 and Addalyn F1) were used as controls. The results obtained for carbohydrates (HPLC-RID) indicated that the highest values (27.82 mg/g) were recorded in the paternal line AS 10 of the new hybrid … Show more

“…Precos was positioned in an obvious negative correlation, in a quadrant on an opposite diagonal to the other commercial hybrids. The parental lines of the two new commercial hybrids (in rectangles that respect the filial color) are spread in all four quadrants of the PCA, but in pairs and arranged above or below the horizontal axis which confirms the genetic approximations according to the breeding scheme presented in our previous research [39]. Thus, the parental lines closely grouped in pairs, confirm that the phenotype represented by the 19 parameters analyzed accurately reflects their genotype.…”

“…The eight lines included in the experiment were the parental lines of the commercial hybrids AS300 and AS400 in F7 and F6 generations, respectively. The female and male lines are represented with parental symbols ♀ and ♂ [39].…”

“…We found overall lower levels, which may be affected by the environmental conditions and the agronomic practices, as well as the genotypes tested, thus reflecting the importance of comparing genotypes under similar conditions. Nevertheless, our values at the fully ripe stage were similar to those of the tomato (e.g., [ 49 ]) and, therefore, we cannot consider peppers as a low-in-sugar tasteless species, as reported historically [ 2 ]. On the contrary, these metabolites should be studied in breeding initiatives aimed at improving flavor, together with capsaicinoids (in hot peppers) and volatiles.…”

“…Tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum L.) fruits have substantial nutraceutical qualities, being an important source of fibers, lycopene and other carotenoids, vitamin C, and potassium, their consumption reducing the risk of certain cancers, cardiovascular disease, ultraviolet-light-induced skin damage, and osteoporosis [ 1 , 2 ]. Additionally, tomato crop production is important from an economical point of view, as it is the second most important fruit or vegetable crop next to potato ( Solanum tuberosum L.) being cultivated worldwide [ 3 ].…”
