Physico-chemical and mechanical properties of Ti3SiC2-based materials elaborated from SiC/Ti by reactive spark plasma sintering

Abstract: In this paper, the synthesis of Ti 3 SiC 2 from SiC/Ti powder using reactive spark plasma sintering (R-SPS) in the temperature range of 1300-1400 ℃ is reported. The results show that the purity of Ti 3 SiC 2 is improved up to 75 wt% when the holding time is increased from 10 to 20 min at 1400 ℃. The thermodynamic and experimental results indicate that Ti 3 SiC 2 formation takes place via the reaction of a pre-formed TiC phase with the silicides, formed from the eutectic compositions. Detailed analysis of mecha… Show more

“…Boron carbide (B 4 C) holds conspicuous physicochemical properties, such as high melting point (2350 • C), high Young's modulus (450-470 GPa), high hardness (35)(36)(37)(38)(39)(40)(41)(42)(43), low density (2.52 g/cm 3 ), good resistance oppose oxidation and corrosion, excellent thermal conductivity and good wear resistance. Accordingly, B 4 C is widely used in aerospace bulletproof armor plates, neutron absorbers in the nuclear field, and some engineering wear-resistant parts.…”

“…Turki et al [22] used SiC/Ti powders as raw material to synthesize Ti 3 SiC 2 by reactive spark plasma sintering (R-SPS) in the temperature range of 1300-1400 ℃. The increase of holding time was beneficial to the purity of Ti 3 SiC 2 , and the highest purity was 75%.…”

“…However, their fracture toughness was low. At the present stage, some researchers have realized the in-situ synthesis of Ti 3 SiC 2 by adopting various methods such as thermal isostatic sintering, hot-pressed sintering, discharge plasma sintering, self-spreading sintering, and chemical vapor deposition synthesis [18][19][20][21][22]. Wang et al [23] used Al 2 O 3 , TiC, and Si as the raw materials and synthesized Ti 3 SiC 2 /Al 2 O 3 composites via in-situ reaction using spark plasma sintering at 1300 °C.…”
