Physically Realizable Space for the Purity-Depolarization Plane for Polarized Light Scattering Media

Abstract: We propose a physically realizable space for the polarized light scattering measurement using the Stokes-Mueller formalism by a purity-index-depolarization-index (PI-P_{Δ}) plane. The parameter PI is defined from indices of polarimetric purity (IPP), which exhibits the overall magnitude of the polarimetric randomness of a medium, while the depolarization index (P_{Δ}) delineates a proper global degree of polarimetric purity and may also refer to the average measure of depolarization power of the scattering med… Show more

“…If the determinant of a Type-I canonical Mueller matrix is negative, then g 3 is negative. The region of negative g 3 seems to be associated with anomalous depolarization, which is known to be unlikely to occur but has been shown theoretically to be possible for Mie backscattering from spherical particles [76,88,90]. The region OABE corresponds 5Q 3 ∆ < 3P 2 ∆ (Equation ( 6)), or (trC) 3 − 6trC trC 2 + 8trC 3 < 0 [87].…”

“…2c ); however, some concepts like anisotropy can be a combination of several fundamental polarisation processes 16 , 57 . It is worth mentioning that the depolarisation property—which is used for evaluating a SOP’s disorder, randomness, or uncertainty 3 – 5 —is also linked with the concept of entropy in polarimetric research 11 , 173 . While the above parameters are derived from a full MM (4 × 4); Ghosh et al and Wang et al also reported works on 3 × 3 MM decomposition methods, related simulations and experiments, with an emphasis on biomedical applications 174 , 175 .…”

“…This is a very intuitive space because every possible depolarizer occupies a different spatial position in a tetrahedron inscribed within the Purity - Space [43, 47]. Thus, the physical interpretation of IPPs further synthesizes the depolarizing information of samples because every combination of IPPs is linked to a different depolarizing mechanism [45, 48] ― in contrast to the P Δ indicator, which gives an overall depolarizing estimation.…”
