Physically abused preschoolers' responses to peers' distress.

Abstract: Response to peers' distress for which they were (target-caused) or were not (bystander) the cause were coded for 11 abused and nonabused preschoolers between the ages of 35 and 67 months. Each child was observed on a playground for an average of 1 IS min. Consistent with results of research with toddlers, abused preschoolers exhibited more inappropriate responses (aggression and withdrawal) toward distressed peers (bystander incidents) than did nonabused preschoolers. Also, abused children were more likely to … Show more

“…Maltreated children engage in less symbolic and dyadic play (Alessandri, 1991); they may fail to show typical empathic responses to distress in other children (Howes & Espinosa, 1985;Klimes-Dougan & Kistner, 1990;Main & George, 1985); they make fewer references to internal states, and maltreating mother-child dyads discuss emotions less frequently than do nonmaltreating dyads (Beeghly & Cicchetti, 1994;Shipman & Zeman, 1999); and they manifest delayed theory-of-mind understanding (Cicchetti, Rogosch, Maughan, Toth, & Bruce, 2003;Pears & Fisher, 2005). Maltreated preschoolers have poorer understanding of universal adult (During & McMahon, 1991) and child facial expressions of emotion (Camras, Grow, & Ribordy, 1983;Camras et al, 1990) and show clear limitations of social cognition in story-stem completion tasks (Macfie, Cicchetti, & Toth, 2001;Macfie et al, 1999).…”

“…Their caregivers were observed to display inconsistent behaviour toward their infants: they appeared to be frightened of their infants, as well as being frightening towards them (Main and Hesse, 1990). Maltreated children have been found to respond with anger and aggression both to friendly gestures from other children and to signs of distress from peers (Howes and Eldredge, 1985;Main and George, 1985;Klimes-Dougan and Kistner, 1990). Maltreated children have also been observed to respond to distress in peers by exhibiting fear and vacillating between comforting and attacking behaviours (Main and George, 1985).…”
