Physical working conditions as covered in European monitoring questionnaires

Abstract: BackgroundThe prevalence of workers with demanding physical working conditions in the European work force remains high, and occupational physical exposures are considered important risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), a major burden for both workers and society. Exposures to physical workloads are therefore part of the European nationwide surveys to monitor working conditions and health. An interesting question is to what extent the same domains, dimensions and items referring to the physical work… Show more

“…Dealing with such complex structured exposure variables is difficult. In future surveys, the variables of "works in awkward postures" and "overhead work" should be assessed separately as has been done in comparable employment surveys, for example in Denmark or Norway [21]. This modification may make it possible to gain more information about overhead work and to simplify the statistical analysis.…”

“…The self-reported frequency of working in awkward postures is just one item on a long list of physical working conditions [16][17][18][19] [20]. Unfortunately, the wording of the question regarding work in awkward postures was not differentiated enough to be comparable to the earlier survey at an international level [21]. Therefore, the item was changed and extended in the most recent survey in 2018.…”
