Physical Properties of Undisturbed Tropical Peat Soil at Pekan District, Pahang, West Malaysia

Abstract: Peat soilare considered soft soilwith havingweakcharacteristicssuch as low shear strength, high moisture content, and compressibility. Construction perspective, peat soilis consideredas unstable soil due to its poor engineering properties. It may cause an extensive loss in road orbuilding construction projects. Thekey objectives of the current study areto examinethe physical properties of peat soil including shear strength, liquidlimit, moisturecontent, organic content, pH, and dr… Show more

“…From the result of direct shear test done on bottom ash, the peak cohesion and friction angle were 1.36 kPa and 33.73° respectively. The peak cohesion and friction angle for his samples were 3.8 kPa and 32° respectively [5]. The result is quite similar.…”

“…Cohesive soils such as soft clay usually settle from compression which consists of elastic settlement and consolidation. The large proportion of the settlement on soft clay is attributed to consolidation process which may continue for a long time depending on the ability of the soil to dissipate excess pore water pressure due to construction load [4][5]. The remedial measure such as insertion of stone column has been widely used in order to overcome this problem [6][7].…”

“…Various soil stabilizing agents have been utilized in the past few decades to improve the compressibility, strength, and durability of the complex behavior of clay soil, which includes the utilization of traditional (cement and lime) or alternative soil binders (silica fume, fly ash, etc.) 2 , 3 or the combinations of both 4 7 . However, due to the negative impact resulting from using cement as a soil stabilizer, the construction industry is now migrating to a better approach of utilizing an alternative soil stabilizer that is more environmentally friendly 8 10 .…”
