Physical Properties of PBMA‐b‐PBA‐b‐PBMA Triblock Copolymers Synthesized by Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

Abstract: The physical properties of well‐defined poly(butyl methacrylate)‐block‐poly(butyl acrylate)‐block‐poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA‐b‐PBA‐b‐PBMA) triblock copolymers synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) are reported. The glass transition and the degradation temperature of copolymers were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). DSC measurements showed phase separation for all of the copolymers with the exception of the one with the shortest … Show more

“…Only a weak T m at 59 °C appeared in the endotherm, as was the case in the corresponding PMMA‐ b ‐PEO‐ b ‐PMMA copolymer. The PBMA block showed a T g at 12 °C, which is much lower than the T g found for PBMA (30.2 °C), a value that is very close to the T g value (33.1 °C) of an ATRP‐mediated PBMA, as reported by Martin‐Gomis et al43 Thus, T g , related to the outer PBMA segments, moves to a lower temperature. To confirm the absence of T g of PEO blocks, some runs of cast films of copolymer samples were performed by DMA (Fig.…”

“…The same group synthesized a series of TP all acrylic-based high temperature thermoplastic elastomers containing poly(1-adamatyl acrylate) as a hard domain and poly(tetrahydrofurfuryl acrylate) as a soft domain by RAFT polymerization [ 93 ]. These TPEs exhibited superior stress-strain behavior compared to that of conventional all acrylic-based TPEs consisting of PMMA and PBA made by controlled radical processes [ 94 ], while the tensile strength was lower compared to that of similar products prepared via living anionic polymerization [ 95 ].…”

“…The data are expressed as mean values of replicated measurements and error bars correspond to standard deviations of the results. 30 Two macroinitiators with different lengths were obtained. Their characterization by 1 H NMR and SEC confirmed the structure and controllability of the reaction.…”
