Physical properties of near-Earth asteroids with a low delta-v: Survey of target candidates for the Hayabusa2 mission

Abstract: Sample return from the near-Earth asteroid known as 25143 Itokawa was conducted as part of the Hayabusa mission, with a large number of scientific findings being derived from the returned samples. Following the Hayabusa mission, Hayabusa2 was planned, targeting sample return from a primitive asteroid. The primary target body of Hayabusa2 was asteroid 162173 Ryugu; however, it was also necessary to gather physical information for backup target selection. Therefore, we examined five asteroids spectroscopically, … Show more

“…Radar, thermal-IR, and many light curve studies have been conducted on this asteroid to date. Hasegawa et al (2018) derive a synodic rotation period of 7.911 ± 0.0001 hours, in agreement with the synodic period of 7.908 ± 0.001 hours from Franco et al (2010). This is also consistent with more recent observations by Warner & Stephens (2021), who report synodic rotation periods of 7.9219 ± 0.0003 hours and 7.9144 ± 0.0004 hours.…”

“…A-type asteroids are considered olivine-dominated asteroids and originated from the mantle of differentiated bodies (e.g., Cruikshank & Hartmann 1984;Sunshine et al 2007). Most A-type asteroids have very red spectra (e.g., DeMeo et al 2009DeMeo et al , 2019, but olivine-dominated asteroids with an unweathered surface (flatter spectra) have been found among NEAs (Reddy et al 2011;Hasegawa et al 2018).…”

“…The key aspect of this work is the combination between the dynamical evolution of the particles and the modelling of the impact ejecta in order to estimate the number of potentially collectable particles. In an effort to have a more general understanding of the in-orbit collection scenarios, we compare different target asteroids based on their size and density, which can be derived and inferred from ground observations [29]. Additionally, we compare three different types of materials and several strength levels to understand the sensitivity of the collection scenarios to these parameters that have and intrinsically higher level of uncertainty.…”
